Maine starts strong, splits with Hawks Merchant cashes in with 4-hitter; one run against Jaegge enough for Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Maine Black Bears earned a split with America East rival Hartford, taking the opener 5-2, then dropping the nightcap 1-0 in college softball Sunday afternoon.

In the opener, Jenna Merchant surrendered just two runs on four hits for UMaine.

Aliegha Rautenberg, Lindsay Hlywak, Erica Sobel and Jessica Brady each knocked in a run for the winners.

In the second game, Monica Hayes knocked in the game-winner with two out in the seventh for the Hawks.

Candace Jaegge gave up six hits and one run in 6? innings of work for the Black Bears.

R.I. College sweeps USM

At Gorham Saturday, the Anchorwomen swept a pair from the Huskies, winning the opener 4-2 and the nightcap 6-2.

In the first game, Michele Fanelli roped a two-run double to pace Rhode Island College. USM cut the deficit to 3-1 in the third, but a Southern Maine runner was gunned down at the plate.

In the second game, Fanelli went 4-for-4, driving in three runs and scoring one. She launched an RBI triple. Sunshine Anders provided an RBI triple for the Huskies.

St. Joseph’s earns sweep of UMPI

At Standish Saturday, the Monks racked up 37 runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Owls, winning the opener 22-0 and the nightcap 14-4.

In the first game, St. Joseph’s pounded out 26 hits, including homers from Courtney Sirois and Helene Liaci and a Kristen Gaudette triple. Monique Daniel and Lucretia Gagnon each singled for the Owls. Gaudette pitched a one-hitter for the win.

In the second game, Sirois was 4-for-4 with four singles. Kelly Premo homered for the Monks. Jill Osier threw a three-hitter. Sarah Gibb led UMPI with a double, Lucretia Gagnon doubled twice and Tiffany Miller earned an RBI with a sacrifice fly.

Colby sweeps USM

At Gorham Sunday, Colby outscored Southern Maine 15-3 in a doubleheader, taking both games, 13-2 in the opener, and 2-1 in the nightcap.

In the first game, the White Mules broke open a 4-2 game with four runs in the sixth and five in the seventh. Marcy Wagner sparked the scoring with a three-run double and an RBI single. Annette Caswell scattered just three hits over seven innings.

In the second game, Wendy Bonner singled home Jessica Fitzgerald and Kristen Tong tripled and came home on a sacrifice fly by Emily Forbes to spark Colby.

Toni-Lynn Robbins gave up just three hits to earn the complete-game win.

Melissa Henderson took the tough-look loss for the Huskies, surrendering seven hits, all singles, walking two and striking out six.

MMA takes four of four

At Castine Saturday, the Maine Maritime Mariners outscored Wheelock College 34-5 in two games, easily sweeping a doubleheader, 20-5 in the first game and 14-0 in the second. Sunday, the Mariners tallied 32 runs on 26 hits in beating Lesley College 19-11 in the opener and 13-5 in the nightcap.

In Saturday’s first game, MMA pounded out 14 hits. Janice Spear sparked the attack by knocking in six runs, virtue of two singles and a triple. Stacey Ryan had a single, a double, and knocked in a pair, as did Jess Clifford. Abbi Darling had a pair of singles and two RBIs. Erin Connor had two singles and knocked in a run.

In the second game, Maygan Hardison, Alaina Hanlon and Darling each knocked three hits and Ryan had two to pace the Mariners.

Janice Spear got the win for MMA with a two-hitter.

In Sunday’s first game, Janice Spear drove in six runs, and went 4 for 4 with a double. Abbi Darling added three hits and two RBIs.

In the second game, Spear continued her hot hitting, going 4 for 5 with three RBIs. She also got the victory in the circle, allowing just one earned run on five hits.

Alaina Hanlon belted an RBI double for the Mariners, as did Jess Clifford. Caitlin Carr belted a home run, and drove in a pair.

UMF takes three from Husson

At Bangor Sunday, Beaver pitching allowed just one hit and one run as UM-Farmington took three games from Husson. The Beavers won 3-1 in Sunday’s first game and took both Saturday in Farmington, winning 12-2 and 5-0.

In Sunday’s first game, Goyette had two RBIs in the sixth to erase a 1-0 Husson lead. Heather Marden singled twice. Husson’s Jamie Wells scattered six hits in the loss and Kate Farnsworth doubled.

In Saturday’s first game, the Beavers pounded out 18 hits and Jessica Wenkus pitched a four-hitter with no walks. Sam Goyette hit a double and a triple and Hadley See drove in two runs. Erin Weston, Nicole Munroe and Sam Scott had a double each for Husson and Wells had two singles.

In Saturday’s second game, Liz Seubert hit three singles and Marden singled twice. Munroe doubled for the Braves and Missy Michaud hit two singles.

Bowdoin, Colby split

At Brunswick Saturday, Colby’s White Mules and Bowdoin’s Polar Bears split a twinbill with Bowdoin taking the opener 6-0 and Colby winning the nightcap 8-1 in baseball action Saturday.

In the first game, Kevin Bougie, Andy Workman, Tom McMahon and Seth Paradis all doubled to spark a five-run third inning for Bowdoin (7-8). Scott Jamieson allowed only three hits and struck out seven.

In the second game, Matt Simard hammered a two-run homer to go with a two-run double to pace 6-6 Colby.

Matt Gibson scattered seven hits while striking out seven.

USM, Western Conn. State split

At Gorham, Pat Liddy’s three-hitter helped the Huskies to a 5-1 victory in the second game and a split of their doubleheader with the Colonels, who took the opener 2-1.

In the first game, Ian Reilly delivered a triple and Anthony Puccio produced an RBI single to pace Western Connecticut State. Darrin Daniels scored on a double-steal for the Huskies.

In the second game, Craig Gureckis smacked an RBI double and Tyler Delorme drove in a pair on a single, all in the fifth. Liddy fanned nine in a complete-game effort.

Braves sweep Beavers

At Farmington Saturday, the Braves outscored the Beavers 19-3 in two games, winning 14-1 in the opener and 5-2 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Bucksport’s Craig Harvey smacked two homers and drove in seven runs to propel Husson. Shawn Henderson singled twice.

In the second game, Harvey had three more hits and Kyle Mathieu knocked a double to pace Husson. Jared Foster also had three hits for the Braves.

Lincoln’s Zach Reed and Dan Fay each doubled for the Beavers.

At Standish Saturday, Monks pitching didn’t give up a run and allowed just three hits to shut out the Owls 7-0 and 10-0 in a doubleheader.

In the first game, Dan Brent struck out 10 in four innings to earn the win. Jesse LaCasse doubled twice for St. Joseph’s. Royce Blackwood led UMPI with a double.

In the second game, Greg Kimball fanned five and gave up one hit in three innings of work. Howard Rutherford singled three times and Derek McIntosh hit a double and a single. Ben Goodwin, Michael Lane and Chris Saucier had a single apiece for the Owls.

At Bangor Sunday, Husson and UMaine-Farmington split a doubleheader, with the Braves taking the first game 5-1, and the Beavers winning the nightcap 5-4

In the second game, Zach Reed had a double, a single, and drove in a run to pace the Beavers. Tom Venture added an RBI double.

Mike Worcester led the Braves with an RBI single. Keith Simmons added a single and a double, and Shawn Henderson had two singles.

In the first game, Craig Harvey smacked two doubles and John McGlinn hit two singles plus an RBI for Husson.

Keith Simmons drove in two runs on a single and a double for the Braves. Reed had two singles for the Beavers.

At Gorham Sunday, Adam Lemieux doubled, singled and drove in four runs to pace the Huskies to victory.

Jason Thibodeau pitched 5.1 innings of scoreless, three-hit relief for Southern Maine. Greg Stacy scored on an infield error, and Colin Loveless smacked a two-run single.

Damon Whalen ripped an RBI double and later scored on a groundout for Wheaton.

Thomas splits doubleheaders

The Thomas College Terries swept a Saturday doubleheader and then got swept themselves on Sunday against Lyndon State.

On Sunday, Lyndon State took advantage of six Thomas errors in two games to take both of them, 3-2 in the opener and 14-8 in the nightcap.

Travis Hotham paced the Terriers with an RBI double and Josh Porter added a double of his own. Aaron Bonenfant singled home a run.

In the nightcap, the Terriers committed four errors during the ninth, as Lyndon State scored nine runs, all unearned.

Thomas was led by Scott Sibley, who went 3 for 4 with a solo homer and an RBI double. Travis Hotham smacked a two-run triple.

On Saturday, Thomas swept with a 7-2 win in the first game and 8-1 in the second.

In the first game, Scott Brawn belted a grand slam to spark the Terriers.

Aaron Bonenfant smacked two doubles for Thomas. Dave Sweet had a pair of solo homers for Lyndon State.

In the second game, Scott Sibley knocked a two-run homer to pace Thomas.

He went 3-for-4 with two singles to go with his homer. Bucksport’s Buzz Simpson had a double, a single, and knocked in a run.
