BANGOR – St. Mary’s Catholic Church has scheduled a memorial Mass for the Most Rev. Edward O’Leary at 12:15 p.m. Thursday at the church on Ohio Street.
The Rev. Frank J. Murray, pastor, announced the service during weekend Masses. Bishop Emeritus O’Leary, who died April 2, was a Bangor native and member of St. Mary’s.
Several services have been scheduled this week in Portland as well in memory of O’Leary, who served as bishop of Maine’s quarter-million Roman Catholics from 1974 until 1989.
The rite of reception of the body was held Sunday evening at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland.
A memorial Mass for the public will be held at 12:15 p.m. today at the cathedral, and a prayer service is scheduled there at 7 p.m. Between services, the body will lie in state so the public may pay its respects to the late bishop.
The funeral Mass, with Cardinal Bernard Law as principal celebrant, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Cathedral. Due to space limitations, admission is by ticket only.
