ROCKPORT – Police gave few details about a highway accident Sunday that left two people dead and a third seriously injured.
Rockport police Officer Travis Ford said the accident was a head-on crash on Route 17 near the Rockport-Hope town line. The crash was reported a few minutes after 10 a.m., he said.
Ford said the driver of one car and a passenger in the other were killed when the vehicles collided.
He said the second car’s driver was found conscious and extricated from the wreckage. He was airlifted to a hospital, where his condition was unknown.
As of 7 p.m., Ford would not release the names of the victims or any other information about the accident.
Earlier in the day, he said one of the victim’s families had been notified, but the other’s had not.
Maine State Police officers were at the scene reconstructing the accident midday Sunday.
