Shooting guard will play for UMaine men’s squad

The National Letters of Intent won’t be faxed out until today, but the University of Maine men’s basketball team has already unofficially filled a hole in their backcourt.

Kevin Reed, a 6-foot-2 shooting guard from Yarmouth, Mass., confirmed Tuesday night that he has verbally committed to the school and will head to Orono in the fall.

Reed recently completed a year of prep school hoop at St. Thomas Moore [Conn.] School, where he was named a third-team all-conference player.

St. Thomas More competes in the same New England league that contains Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield.

“It was a hard decision, but I just felt like it was the closest place to home and their schedule [contains] a lot of places close to home,” Reed said.

Reed, who played small forward and power forward at Dennis-Yarmouth High School before heading to St. Thomas Moore to polish up his academic record, said he considered offers from Stony Brook, Fairfield and Robert Morris in addition to Maine.

Reed said his strength may be his versatility.

“I’m a hard worker, I guess. I’m a hard-nosed player. I can shoot. I try to do a little bit of everything,” he said.

He will join two other backcourt additions for the Bears: Ludmil Hadjisotirov transferred to UMaine from Boston College and will become eligible at the semester break, while Thomas Hill recently completed his second year at Westark [Ark.] College, where his team finished seventh in the national junior college tourney.

Hill was named the winner of the Bud Obee Award, which goes to the top player under 6-foot-1 at the national tourney.
