Three Bay State suspects indicted in cocaine case

BRUNSWICK – Three suspects were indicted on federal drug charges Tuesday after their arrests in what police describe as one of the state’s biggest seizures of crack cocaine.

Police confiscated more than a pound of what is believed to be crack cocaine when they arrested three Massachusetts residents Friday near the outlet stores on Route 1 in Kittery.

Brunswick police Cmdr. Timothy Young said the 500 grams of crack have a value of about $50,000.

“Typically it would be coming in much smaller quantities or it would be coming in different form and it would be cooked up in Maine,” Young said.

Young said the arrests culminated a two-month investigation that began in Brunswick. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, Massachusetts State Police and the Kittery Police Department also participated in the investigation.

Police arrested Alciviades Tavarez, 42, and his wife, Ingred Liriano, 35, both of Andover, Mass., and Amaury Tavarez, 27, of Lawrence, Mass., who is believed to be Alciviades Tavarez’s younger brother.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Toof said each suspect was charged with conspiracy to distribute 50 or more grams of crack cocaine; possession with intent to distribute 50 or more grams of crack cocaine; and six separate counts of distributing crack or heroin.

If convicted of the most serious charges, the suspects each face 10 years to life in prison, Toof said.
