Bangor Garden Show has events for everyone

The Bangor Garden Show opens with Preview Night Thursday, April 11, continuing 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 12-13, and running 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 14. General admission costs $8 per adult, $3 for students and is free to children under 5. Thursday, April 11

. 6-9 p.m., Preview Night, $35 per person, covers light hors d’oeuvres, wine fountain. Tickets must be bought in advance, and will be available until 4 p.m. today at the Bangor Auditorium box office.

Friday, April 12

. Noon, “Recycling and Composting in the Bangor Area,” Jerry Hughes, Bangor Public Works-Bangor Recycling Committee.

. 1 p.m., “Reinventing the Victory Garden: Home Food Production for Family and Community,” Roger Swain of PBS’ “The Victory Garden.”

. 2 p.m., “The History of Maine Apples: A Poignant Legacy,” apple historian George Stilphen.

. 3 p.m., “A Garden for All Senses,” Bob Bangs of Windswept Gardens.

. 4 p.m., “Attracting Birds to Your Yard,” Marilyn Soper.

. 5 p.m., “Healing Power of Native American Herbs: Medical System of the Cherokee,” Lou Cappiello.

. 6-8 p.m., “Hands-on Flower Arranging,” two sessions, Phil Fredericks, Bangor Floral.

Saturday, April 13

. 10 a.m., Roger Swain of PBS’ “The Victory Garden,” “Stretching April’s Showers: Water-saving Tips for New England Gardens.”

. Noon, “Orchids for Everyone,” Dick Keen and Dennis Roessiger, Eastern Maine Orchid Society.

. 1 p.m., “Bloom Succession in the Garden,” John O’Keefe, Rocky Ridge Perennials.

. 1-4 p.m., Lyn Snow, singing session at the KBB Booth.

. 2-4 p.m., “From the Garden to the Table: Eating Your Way to a Healthier Lifestyle,” Mary Flemming, RD and co-author of “The Color Code.” Eeastern Maine Medical Center chef John Conners will also demonstrate simple ways to cook fruits and vegetables. Flemming will explain how these are easily incorporated into delicious meals.

. 4-5 p.m., Awards and closing ceremony and reception, “People’s Choice” Award, the Gwethalyn M. Phillips Landscaper’s Choice Award and Show Volunteer Award.

. 2 p.m. Learn about leaves and trees with Kevin Allcroft, forest management consultant, Forestree Concepts.
