Dostie, Simmons hurl Brave wins

STANDISH – Dave Dostie and Keith Simmons each turned in fine pitching efforts and each earned their third win to help the Husson Braves of Bangor sweep the St. Joseph’s Monks in a college baseball doubleheader Wednesday.

Husson won the opener 4-2 and the nightcap 5-2.

Dotsie allowed five hits while striking out 11 in the first game. Josh Ferguson slammed a two-run double for the Braves and Craig Harvey added an RBI single.

Andy Exley cranked a two-run home run for St. Joseph’s.

Simmons scattered nine hits and struck out five in the second game. Deric Prescott and Jason Folsom each recorded a double and two RBIs for Husson.

Lucas Hannigan and Derek McIntosh each singled twice for St. Joseph’s.

Thomas sweeps Beavers

At Farmington, Scott Brawn slammed two homers in the first game as Thomas swept a doubleheader from UMaine-Farmington, 17-2 in the opener and 12-8 in the second.

In the first game, Scott Brawn belted a grand slam as part of his five-hit, seven-RBI effort for the Terriers.

Winning pitcher Travis Hotham added a double and two singles, and Buzz Simpson and Josh Porter had three singles each.

Keith LeBlanc had a double for the Beavers.

In the second game, the Terriers scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to erase a three-run deficit. Aaron Bonefont’s three-run homer capped the scoring after Shawn Coughlin singled home the go-ahead run.

James Writer homered and singled for the Beavers, LeBlanc had a double, and two singles, and Jon Rutkiwewicz had three singles.

Softball

St. Joe’s take two from Husson

At Standish, St. Joseph’s allowed Husson of Bangor only a single run in sweeping a doubleheader, 9-1 in the first game and 14-0 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Kelly Premo hit her fifth homer of the season to spark the Monks.

Sarah Ouellette and Courtney Sirois hit a double and single each for the winners, and Premo also had a triple. Kristen Gaudette struck out six and walked one.

Erin Weston had the lone hit for Husson, a double.

In the second game, Ouellette posted two doubles and a single with two RBIs as the Monks rolled.

Sue Picard added a two-run double, and Premo hit her 12th career homer, tops in school history. Premo also had a double.

Singles by Weston and Sarah McIntire were the only two hits by the Braves.
