Recent coaching changes at Hodgdon High School have Dennis Guy out as the girls basketball coach and Tim Guiod in as the softball coach.

Guy, who had been the hoop coach for three years, submitted his letter of resignation to superintendent Deborah Stewart last week.

He did not specify his reasons for resigning in his letter, but said Wednesday he just needed to get away from coaching.

“My mindset is that I need to get away from it for a while,” Guy said. “It’s personal. It had nothing to do with the team. They were very good, they did everything I asked them to do and I’m going to miss them a lot.”

Hodgdon athletic director Marty Bouchard said the job was advertised for the first time Wednesday in the weekly Houlton Pioneer Times.

Guy led the Hawks to a 26-32 record in three years. Hodgdon was just 4-14 in the regular season this year but wound up with the No. 4 seed for the Eastern Maine Class C tournament and beat Penobscot Valley of Howland in a divisional quarterfinal to gain a bid to the Bangor Auditorium. The Hawks fell to eventual Eastern Maine champ Calais in the regional quarterfinals.

Guy was happy with the way the season went – just getting to the Auditorium with a 4-14 record was a success, he said – except for the effect that the open tournament had on the team this year.

He tried to give his players much more equal playing time than before, because that was supposed to be one of the open tournament’s benefits according to its proponents. Guy was also hoping his younger players would gain experience

Looking back at the season, the Hawks lost nine games by less than five points. Even though Hodgdon might not have made the tournament under the old system, Guy doesn’t like the way things are now.

“I changed my coaching philosophy. I probably lost some games because of [the substitutions],” he said. “I can’t say that I like [the open tournament].”

Guy, who is the sales manager at FM radion station WHOU, said he will take at least one year off from coaching and may return at some point. Guy has also coached soccer at Houlton High.

Guiod, who was appointed to the softball position at a recent school board meeting, will take over a team that lost just one senior from last year’s roster. The Hodgdon assistant boys basketball coach replaces Mark Scott.

Hodgdon opens its season April 22.
