MPR plans broadcast of UM jazz ensemble

ORONO – Five local University of Maine students will perform with the UMaine Jazz Ensemble in a live broadcast 9-10:30 p.m. Friday, April 12, on Maine Public Radio. They are:

. Arthur Lidral, Stillwater.

. Patrick Bolin, Winterport.

. Christina Lamare, Orono.

. Candace Hart, Hampden.

. Sean Ociepka, Hampden.

The performance will be broadcast on MPR’s seven stations that cover a listening area which includes Maine, New Hampshire, parts of upstate Vermont, northeastern Massachusetts, and New Brunswick.

The broadcast also will be available at MPR’s Web site: www.mainepublicradio.com.

Bolin plays tenor saxophone, and Lamare is a member of the trumpet section. Hart plays trombone, Lidral plays drums and percussion, and Ociepka plays bass.

The concert program includes solos by Bolin, Lamare and Lidral.

The group is directed by UMaine music professor and nationally renowned jazz artist Karel Lidral, who also will be a featured soloist.

Pieces to be performed on the broadcast include Thad Jones’ arrangement of Jerome Richardson’s “Groove Merchant,” John Fedchok’s arrangement of John Coltrane’s ballad “Central Park West,” “Nica’s Dream” by Horace Silver, David Springfield’s original composition “A Pat on the Back,” a big band arrangement of Tower of Power’s hit “What Is Hip?,” Roger Holme’s arrangement of the Charlie Parker/Benny Harris composition “Ornithology,” Frank Mantooth’s arrangement of “Isfahan,” and John Fedchok’s original composition “Brazilian Fantasy.”

In addition to the live radio broadcast, the UMaine Jazz Ensemble will present its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 2, in Minsky Recital Hall in the Class of 1944 Hall on the UMaine campus. The UMaine Jazz Combo also will perform at the May 2 concert.
