Police chase leads to arrest of Bangor man

BANGOR – A local man faces multiple charges, including a felony charge for eluding an officer, after leading police on a brief pursuit that began in downtown Bangor and ended in Hampden on Wednesday morning, police said.

Jason Cameron, 26, was arrested on charges of failure to stop, eluding a police officer and driving without a license, according to Lt. David Kane of the Bangor Police Department. Cameron was taken to Penobscot County Jail, where he remained Wednesday evening.

Kane said Cameron came to the attention of police after a dispatcher received a telephone call just after 11 a.m. from a resident who reported having seen Cameron, who did not hold a valid driver’s license, driving in the Center Street area.

As police approached Cameron’s car, he fled down Spring, Harlow and Central streets, where he turned onto Main Street and headed toward Hampden, police said. Kane said Cameron made it as far as the intersection of U.S. Route 1A and the Coldbrook Road before losing control of his Ford Crown Victoria and coming to a stop. Kane said the entire episode lasted about 10 minutes.

During the incident, Cameron drove in excess of the posted speed limit, which was 25 mph for much of the way, Kane said. He was not sure exactly what speed Cameron reached during the chase, but noted that it would have been difficult to attain high speeds because of the traffic on the roads at the time.

While he was being pursued by police, Cameron reportedly struck an office building at 105 Main St., where American Express Financial Advisers is located, while driving on the sidewalk in an attempt to get around some vehicles ahead of his in the roadway, Kane said.

A dollar estimate for the damage was not immediately available. Kane said damage mostly affected the building’s exterior, where Cameron’s car glanced off it.

Bangor police officers were assisted by members of the Hampden Police Department, who were preparing to lay out spike mats when the pursuit ended.

No one was injured in connection with the incident, Kane said.
