Warren Center seeks help with yard sale

BANGOR – The Warren Center for Communication and Learning is seeking donations, volunteers and business sponsorships for the second annual yard sale to benefit the Voices to be Heard auditory-oral program at the Warren Center.

The yard sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18, in the Warren Center parking lot at 175 Union St., Bangor.

Volunteers are needed to sort, tag and sell yard sale items. Business sponsorships are available; sponsoring businesses will be listed with name and logo on the back of event T-shirts.

The Warren Center is seeking donations of clean, undamaged goods for its yard sale, but no clothing items. Donations may be dropped off at the Warren Center beginning May 6.

Because of limited storage space, the agency is unable to take donations sooner; very large items should be dropped off the day of the sale.

Voices to be Heard is a program which teaches the deaf how to listen and speak, with the aid of an amplification device, such as a hearing aid or cochlear implant. It is currently the only such program in Maine.

The Warren Center provides a complete range of audiology and speech-language pathology services for children and adults.

The Junior League of Bangor founded the center in 1961 after a measles epidemic in the 1950s left many children deaf or severely hearing-impaired. Over the last 40 years, the Warren Center has seen thousands of clients of all ages and has built its reputation on professional, client-centered care.

As Maine’s largest not-for-profit speech and hearing center, officials said, the agency is proud to never have turned away a child in need of assistance, regardless of ability to pay for services.

Fund raisers such as the yard sale allow the center to purchase much-needed materials for programs. In the past, yard sale funds have been used to buy new books, a boom box for listening exercises and a variety of learning games and educational materials for the Voices program.
