WOODLAND – Tony Alviar allowed one earned run while earning the pitching win and knocked in four and scored twice as Woodland posted a 15-4 high school baseball win over East Grand in a mutual season-opener.

Alviar struck out five batters in five innings and allowed six walks. His one earned run came on a balk in the third inning. East Grand’s three runs in the first inning came off two Woodland errors. Alviar barely missed hitting for the cycle, going 4-for-4, with a triple, double and two singles. He also stole a base.

Jeremy Gillespie went 3-for-4 with one RBI, scored three runs and stole two bases for Woodland, while Justin McCoubrey had two hits with three RBIs and scored a run. Chad Pike added two hits, scored two runs, knocked in three RBI and had one stolen base.

Chris Irish led the Vikings of Danforth as he scored one run and drove in another.

At Woodland, three players missed hitting for the cycle by one hit for the Dragons as they won their season opener on Friday.

Tara Williams and Katie Holmes each went 3-for-4 with a home run, double and single. Williams had three RBIs, three runs scored and one stolen base, while Holmes had five RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Alicia Vose had a triple, double and base hit for Woodland. She finished with three RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base. Chantel Parker led East Grand with two hits.

Katie Smith struck out seven in four innings for Woodland.
