Adult day care center to celebrate first anniversary

This is a special week for My Friend’s Place, a nonprofit adult day care center for people with memory loss or Alzheimer’s disease who are not yet at the stage where they must move into a residential care facility.

Located at the First United Methodist Church at 703 Essex St. in Bangor, My Friend’s Place is celebrating its first anniversary this month and the staff, volunteers and attendees invite you to join in sharing that special occasion.

My Friend’s Place Director Barbara Fister hopes anyone who wants to learn more about the organization or share this anniversary with a friend who participates in the program will call and let her know you wish to attend. You can reach her at 945-0122.

The celebration takes place during the normal course of the program from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. today in the Fireside Room of the First United Methodist Church.

The year-old program was designed for family members who are caring for a relative with memory loss or Alzheimer’s.

Twice weekly, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, individuals are welcome to share quality time at My Friend’s Place.

When the new program was first announced last year, it was made known that “the mission of My Friend’s Place is to provide adults a safe, supportive and friendly environment that offers life-enriching social and recreational activities and respite for caregivers.”

Funding is obtained through grants, community support and a minimal program fee of $6 per hour.

First United Methodist Church graciously provides the space for the program.

If you would like to know more about My Friend’s Place and what it can offer you and your family, you can attend Wednesday’s celebration or call Fister, who will be most happy to talk with you.

Paul Isabel and fellow members of the University of Maine chapter of Phi Sigma Pi fraternity on the Orono campus are right in the middle of a children’s book drive to benefit the Transition Into Parenthood division of the Penquis Community Action Program.

Isabel called to inform readers that fraternity members started manning a book donation booth yesterday in front of Sears at the Bangor Mall.

They will be there from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. today and from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 18, and will gladly accept your donations of new and used books appropriate for children 5 and younger.

Transition Into Parenthood promotes the health and well-being of young parents and their children.

The program helps provide prenatal and postpartum care, and assists parents in obtaining housing, food and clothing, child development and parenting education, life skills and education, employment skills and referrals to other sources of assistance.

For more information about this program, call Penquis CAP at 973-3591.

Once again, it is time to enjoy the wonderful music of barbershop-style harmony.

Anita McGarry of Bangor writes that the “Good Time Barbershop and Variety Show” is 2 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at the Brewer Auditorium on Wilson Street.

The Brewer Auditorium is handicap accessible.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, and free for children under 8, so bring the kiddies because, McGarry assures me, “they will love the band and the dancers!”

Presented by the Heart of Maine Chorus of Sweet Adelines International, the event features not only the Heart of Maine Chorus but the Maine-ly Music Chorus of the local chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America.

Also participating will be 6 Basin Street Band and the fun-loving tap dancers, the High Steppers.

“By the way,” McGarry asks, “have you ever heard 8-Part Harmony?

“The time is now,” she added, “because the male singers will join the women for this presentation.”

Tickets are available at Patrick’s Hallmark in the Broadway Shopping Center in Bangor or you can purchase them at the door.

A portion of the proceeds benefits breast cancer research.

“Mother, Daughter and Doll” are all invited to attend “Tea for Three,” the Spring Tea Party sponsored by the YWCA Bangor-Brewer at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at the Isaac Farrar Mansion on Second Street in Bangor.

And, if you like, it could be grandmothers, granddaughters and dolls; aunts and nieces and dolls; or guardians, little girls and dolls: Any combination thereof, who would like to put on their best party dresses and enjoy this special afternoon.

Your “Spring Tea Party” will include tea and treats, a mini-lesson in etiquette, music and singing, a parade of dolls, door prizes and an opportunity to have a keepsake photo of you and your doll.

The cost is $15 for adults and $10 for children, but you must make reservations by Monday, April 22.

To attend the YWCA Spring Tea Party, call 941-2808, or email marieywca@aldelphi.net.
