Eagles start fast, beat back Sumner’s rally

EAST SULLIVAN – Travis Jordan’s three-run double with two outs in the first got the visiting Ellsworth Eagles started as they jumped out to a 9-0 lead and then withstood a late rally by Sumner for a 10-6 win in the baseball season opener for both teams Tuesday.

Garrett Hardison had three singles, drove in two runs and scored three times while Ray Hanf had a double, single and an RBI for Ellsworth.

Blake Alley had a double, single and scored two runs and Kyle Joy and Ricky Sprague singled twice and drove in two runs each for Sumner.

At Blue Hill, Dusty Bates pitched six strong innings, surrendering just two runs on four hits, striking out nine as the George Stevens Academy Eagles won the season opener.

Mark Clapp knocked a single, a triple, and drove in a run for George Stevens. Jake Lowell rapped two singles and knocked in two runs, and Ryan Hutchins hit two singles and had an RBI.

Ben Smith ripped an RBI single for the Pirates of Guilford.

Medomak Valley 3, Mount Ararat 1

At Waldoboro, Jamie Havener’s two-run single keyed a three-run sixth inning as the host Panthers came from behind to beat Mount Ararat’s Eagles of Topsham.

Mike Beardsley had a pair of singles while Carlos Artegra fired a three-hitter for Medomak.

Brett Rogers struck out 15 and allowed just five hits for Mount Ararat of Topsham.

At Corinth, Joey Kane rapped an RBI double in the sixth which proved to be the game-winner as the Red Devils won the season opener for both schools.

Tristan Strout smacked three singles for Central. James Gray ripped a triple, single and knocked in two runs.

Joyce Terry had two singles and drove in a run for the Patriots of Milo. Mike Grindle belted two RBI singles.

Ellsworth 15, Sumner 0

At East Sullivan, Mallorie Patten tossed a one-hitter with nine strikeouts and three walks as the Eagles rolled to the win in the mutual season-opener.

Tessa Miller singled twice and doubled with an RBI for Ellsworth. Tess Bickford hit three singles. Sarah Silsby singled twice and drove in a run, and Courtney Rausch added a two-run double.

Danie Crowley singled for Sumner.

At Blue Hill, Rachel Wardwell knocked in a run on a single to lead the Eagles to a season-opening win.

All four George Stevens runs scored in the second were scored upon four walks and four wild pitches. Nikki Keniston ripped a single for the winners.

Ivy Galuski rapped a single plus a double for the Pirates of Guilford and Stephanie Wentworth smacked a single plus a triple.
