MATINICUS – The Knox County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of an island woman, the sheriff said Tuesday.

Detectives do not suspect foul play, Sheriff Daniel Davey said.

The Sheriff’s Department was contacted Saturday by an island ambulance attendant. Matinicus is about 18 miles east-southeast of Rockland.

Murina Ames, age unknown, was discovered by Troy Ames, Davey said. He did not know the relationship of the two people, who share the same last name.

Sheriff’s Detective Donna Dennison and two Maine State Police detectives went to the island to investigate and have requested that the state medical examiner conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death, Davey said. The medical examiner was notified at 7:13 a.m. Saturday, Davey said.
