Reed stars as UMF tips Fisher

FARMINGTON – The University of Maine-Farmington Beavers rallied to win the opener and then swept a doubleheader over Fisher College with 6-5 and 4-0 baseball victories here Thursday.

In the first game, after Fisher scored a pair in the top of the seventh, Tom Ventura rapped the game-winning two-run double. James Writer had a pair of hits for the winners.

In the second game, Writer’s two RBI singles gave Mattanawcook Academy graduate Zac Reed all the runs he needed.

Reed held Fisher to just three hits, picking up his third win of the year.

Bowdoin 17, Husson 3

At Brunswick, Chris Davidson belted two homers, going 3-for-4 on the day with three RBIs and a stolen base as the Polar Bears roared past the Braves.

Kevin Bougie went 4-for-6 with three RBIs and scored a pair for Bowdoin. Tom McMahon pitched five innings for the win.

Paul Klink took the loss for Husson of Bangor.

Southern Maine 9, Salem State 1

At Gorham, Brian Marshall went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs as the Huskies sunk the Vikings.

Coach Ed Flaherty is one win away from his 500th victory in 17 seasons.

Eric Kent scattered six hits, walked two, and fanned six for Southern Maine. Andy Lang belted a two-run homer for the Huskies. Marshall also added a sacrifice fly, as did Adam Lemieux.

Plymouth State 11, Saint Joseph’s 4

At Plymouth, N.H., a six-run fifth inning helped the host Plymouth State College Panthers down Saint Joseph’s.

Sophomore Josh Forest allowed five hits and a run through seven innings to get the win. Robbie Burr hit a two-run double while Jay Zinis had an RBI double for PSC.

The Monks’ Jesse LaCasse led the offense with three doubles and two RBIs.

Softball

Huskies sweep Vikings

At Gorham, Melissa Henderson fired a two-hitter to help the Huskies take the first game of a doubleheader with Salem State, 3-0.

The Huskies won the second game, 6-2.

In the first game, Henderson only gave up a pair of singles, faced just four batters over the minimum, and struck out six.

Kristen Tong launched a two-out, two-run single in the sixth to seal the deal for the Huskies.

In the second game, Southern Maine used a single, sacrifice hit, two walks and a pair of errors to seize a 4-0 advantage in the bottom of the second.

Jodie Eldridge fanned four and gave up only four singles to improve to 4-3 on the year.
