JONESPORT – Jared Day tossed a two-hitter, striking out 13 and walking two, to lead Machias to a season-opening 5-0 high school baseball victory over Jonesport-Beals here Friday afternoon.

Joe Richards led Machias with a double, a single and two RBIs. Matt Cobb doubled, singled and drove in a run. Todd Stevens contributed a double and a single and Nate Poore hit an RBI double.

Daren Kelley and Billy Merchant each singled for Jonesport-Beals.

At East Machias, George Stevens Academy’s Chris Sargent struck out five batters, walked one and allowed three runs in five innings to earn the win.

The Eagles broke open the game with eight runs in the fifth inning behind five Washington Academy errors. Jed Garvey led George Stevens of Blue Hill with two singles and a double. He knocked in one run and scored twice and stole two bases. Mark Clapp added a two-run double and scored twice.

Jared Gray and Barret Craven each homered for the Raiders of East Machias in their first game of the season. Gray finished with three singles and an RBI, while Craven had three RBIs and scored two runs.

At Guilford, Dan Macomber’s two-run double with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning brought the Pirates back from a 6-5 deficit for the win.

Macomber also singled behind Darin Spack, who scattered seven hits with seven strikeouts and six walks for Piscataquis Community. Ben Stearns led all hitters with two singles and a double good for three RBIs.

Tom Laski led the Lynx of Lincoln with a solo home run and two singles with one RBI. Fred Pete struck out nine and walked three in 5? innings. Steve Whitney struck out two and walked two in 1? innings of relief work.

At East Sullivan, Dustin Young’s two singles and 10 strikeouts led the Tigers to their first victory of the season.

Young allowed six hits, two walks and one run in seven innings. Dylan Johnson’s RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning secured the victory for Sumner.

Greg Kranich had an RBI single for Stearns of Millinocket. Matt Leino singled twice.

At Waldoboro, Alan Batchelder tossed a five-inning three-hitter, striking out nine and walking just two, as the Vikings of South Paris prevailed.

Garrett Olson smacked two doubles and a single for Oxford Hills while Jeffrey Austin, Tyler Cummings, Jake Treadwell and Brent Grenier added two singles apiece.

Dan Aho tripled and scored in the first inning for the Panthers.

At East Millinocket, Brandi Crandall’ s RBI single with no outs in the top of the seventh inning scored Christine Brewer from second base for what would be the game’s winning run.

Nicki Lyons rapped two singles and scored twice for Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook, who pulled out the win despite a strong effort by Schneck’s Lynn Farrington, who struck out 12 batters while scattering six hits.

Farrington also led the Wolverines at the plate with two singles.

At Harrington, Ashley Woodward notched the fourth no-hitter of her high school career while striking out 13 batters and walking two for the host Narraguagus Knights.

Woodward also had a double, single, and three RBIs. Annie Woodsum had a double, a single and two RBIs while Brook Courchaine added a two-run double.

At East Machias, Jessie Conley pitched a three-hitter and struck out 11 to lead George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill past the Raiders.

Jess McVay led the Eagles with a triple and three singles. Laurie Allen had three singles and Liz Tyler added two.

For the Raiders, Emily Mawhinney and Molly Kurz each tripled.

At Jonesport, Monique Emerson’s grand slam highlighted a 15-run second inning as the Royals outlasted the Bulldogs.

Emerson singled and scored five runs. Jody Pinkham, who pitched 4? innings in relief, smacked a two-run home run, a double and a single for the Royals. She finished with six RBIs and five runs scored. Ashley Fenton rapped two singles and collected five RBIs.

Tracy Guptill paced the Bulldogs with four RBIs on two singles and a double. Sarah Irving doubled and singled with two RBIs. Monique St. Pierre had a double and five RBIs.
