BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of Vermont baseball team jumped out to two early leads in an America East doubleheader against the University of Maine Sunday and went on to sweep the Black Bears 7-3 and 9-6 at Centennial Field.

Maine and Vermont split a pair of games Saturday. The Catamounts took the first game 3-0 and the Black Bears came back to win the second game 8-0.

Vermont moves to 16-13, 5-3 in America East. Maine is now 22-10 (5-3). The Catamounts now sit in a tie for first place in the conference with the Bears.

Maine coach Paul Kostacopoulos attributed the team’s problems this weekend to three factors.

“We weren’t on the ball, [Vermont’s] good pitching, and the weather [a strong wind blowing into the field],” he said Sunday evening. “Put those together and we’re going to struggle a little offensively. … Still, if someone told me I’d be 5-3 in the conference after two road trips, I’d take that.”

In Sunday’s opening game, Vermont scored three runs in the first inning thanks to Barry Chamberland’s two-run single, added another in the second and two more in the fifth for a 6-0 lead. The Black Bears rallied in the sixth thanks to a two-run Brett Ouellette single but left a runner at second base in the seventh.

The Black Bears also stranded a runner at third in the first inning.

“We left way too many guys in scoring position with less than two outs,” Kostacopoulos said.

Vermont’s Andy Kumming held Maine to five hits while striking out six and walking two. Rich Langaniere picked up the loss for the Bears, giving up six runs (five earned).

In the second game, the Catamounts piled on seven runs in the first two innings. Maine answered with five in the second, including a three-run homer by Joe Drapeau, but managed just one more run in the game.

The Black Bear pitchers struggled in the second game as well. Starter Paul Bruder and reliever Adam Labelle, who combined to pitch the first 3 2/3 innings, gave up 10 hits, nine runs (eight earned) and walked five.

“We didn’t pitch well at all,” Kostacopoulos said. “Rich and Paul didn’t do everything they needed to get out of some jams and Adam didn’t pitch well, either.”

In Saturday’s first game, Vermont’s Brian Robinson threw a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and five walks. He allowed just two runners to reach as far as second base after the second inning. Kyle Miller and Jeff Tarigo each had an RBI single. Ouellette doubled for the Black Bears. Mike Collar dropped to 4-2 despite scattering five hits, striking out five and walking none.

In Saturday’s second game, Mike McDonald (4-1) tossed a five-hitter and Simon Williams was 3-for-3 with two RBIs as Maine rebounded. The Black Bears scored a pair of runs in the first inning on RBI singles by Alain Picard and Ouellette. McDonald struck out four and walked four in the win. Vermont’s Bobby Tewksbary singled twice but also committed four errors.
