PORTLAND – Every year the Society of Mayflower Descendants in Maine sends a letter to every sixth grade in public and private schools inviting all pupils to participate in the group’s essay contest.

The subject of this year’s essay is “What the Pilgrims Mean to Me.”

There were 80 entrants this year. The winner for 2001 was Shudian Li from the James F. Doughty Middle School in Bangor.

Shudian immigrated to this country from China with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Shi Chan Li of 170 Bolling Drive.

His essay compares his experience in coming to America with what the Pilgrims faced.

Shudian’s teacher is Sue Foss, and his English as a second language teacher is Kathy Hanscom.

Shudian will receive a certificate, and a $50 prize during a luncheon at the Senator Motel and Convention Center in Augusta at noon May 4.
