WINTER HARBOR – A federal agency has decided not to review a proposed dock near Jordan Island because the dock would not be in its jurisdiction, according to the Winter Harbor town manager.
Town Manager Roger Barto told selectmen Monday night that the federal Department of Conservation has decided not to review a proposal from Grant Dove to build a 167-foot dock on the shore of his Summer Harbor Road property.
“I guess it didn’t go below the low water mark, so they are not involved,” Barto said.
He said that the town’s harbor commission also decided to take no position on the proposed structure.
“They felt it wasn’t going to interfere with anything,” he said.
Code Enforcement Officer John Fuhrman said the Maine Department of Environmental Protection has approved Dove’s proposal, but the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has yet to review it. He said he could issue Dove a building permit if the Army corps approves the dock.
“As long as they all said, ‘Go ahead,'” Fuhrman said.
In other business, selectmen scheduled a special town meeting for May 8 to decide how to dispose of the housing units that the U.S. Navy is giving to the town.
The housing units have been used for military personnel working at the Navy base at Schoodic Point, which the Navy will vacate in June.
Town officials are scheduled to meet April 29 with F. Eugene Dixon of Pennsylvania, a seasonal Winter Harbor resident who is proposing to renovate and market the housing units and to turn the profits from the sale of the units over to the town.
