NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Joe Drapeau led off the eighth inning with a single and later added a two-run double during a 12-run inning Wednesday as the University of Maine baseball team won the second game of a non-league doubleheader against Central Connecticut.

The Black Bears won the nightcap 21-9 after the Blue Devils had posted a 5-4 victory in the opener.

UMaine, which snapped a three-game losing streak, improved to 23-11 heading into a four-game America East weekend series against Albany at Mahaney Diamond in Orono. Central Connecticut stands at 24-16.

Drapeau went 6-for-10 with four RBIs in the doubleheader, while Pat Tobin was 5-for-8 with three RBIs.

In Game 2, UMaine rallied for 12 runs in the eighth inning to win going away.

After Drapeau’s single, Brett Ouellette stroked a one-out RBI double to plate the eventual winning run. With two outs and Tobin (walk) on base, CCSU closer Lew Pappariella injured his arm and was forced to leave the game.

Replacement Joe Cox came on and faced nine batters, surrendering nine more runs before getting the final out of the inning.

UMaine finished with 18 hits, led by Drapeau, who provided a home run and three singles good for four RBIs. Mike Ross rapped two doubles and two singles with four RBIs, while Tobin plated three runs with two homers, a double and a single.

Ryan Harris (2-1) allowed a hit in ? of an inning to earn the win and Simon Williams pitched a scoreless eighth.

Chip Rourke led CCSU with a two-run homer and an RBI single.

The Bears had built an 8-2 lead after 11/2 innings. Tobin hit a solo homer in the six-run second inning, which also included Alain Picard’s three-run double.

In the opener, Rourke singled off Harris to score Tim D’Aquila with two out in the seventh as the Blue Devils pulled out the victory.

Don Crossman and Pappariella combined for 2? innings of one-hit, scoreless relief for CCSU, which had jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first on run-scoring singles by Rourke and Kevin Rival.

Rourke provided a double and two singles with two RBIs for the hosts, while Phil Rothkugel doubled and singled.

Ross belted a solo homer and a single for UMaine, while Drapeau contributed two singles.

Mike Livulpi drilled a two-run home run in the Bears’ three-run second inning, while Ross hit his homer in the third to make it 4-4.

Harris took the loss for UMaine, allowing a run and three hits in his 1? innings of relief work.

Central Connecticut committed six errors in the doubleheader. The Bears made two, both in the first game.
