Monks sweep Braves to get some payback

BANGOR – After being swept at home by the Husson College Braves earlier this season, Saint Joseph’s College’s Monks attained a little payback Wednesday at the John Winkin Baseball Complex.

Senior righthander Brent Dan’s five-hit shutout in the opener and a 16-hit attack in the nightcap gave the Monks 2-0 and 16-2 triumphs which extended their winning streak to eight games.

The second game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

“They came up here trying to prove a point and they did,” said Husson senior righty Dave Dostie, who allowed just one hit and two unearned runs over 5? innings in the opener.

Saint Joseph’s freshman catcher Derek McIntosh, who went 3-for-3 and drove in six runs in the nightcap, said, “We wanted to come down here and put it to them. We want to host the tournament.”

Husson and Saint Joseph’s are among contenders to host the Region 10 Independent Tournament.

In the opener, Dan struck out eight and walked one while throwing 98 pitches, 60 of which were strikes.

“My breaking stuff was working good today,” said Dan, who evened his record at 4-4. “I went with a lot of breaking stuff. I didn’t throw too many fastballs. When I can keep them off balance with my breaking stuff, it makes my fastball more effective.”

Dan would drop down three-quarter arm to throw his sweeping slider and curve.

“He kept us off-balance real well today,” said Husson senior left fielder John McGlinn. “He had a real good breaking ball. He throws hard enough where he has you looking for the fastball and he hides that breaking ball real well. You can’t see it until it’s too late.”

Saint Joseph’s got its runs in the third inning without the benefit of a hit.

Jake Rodden earned a leadoff walk after fouling off four two-strike pitches and raced to third on Dostie’s errant pickoff attempt.

Justin Lambert fouled off four two-strike pitches to earn another walk and he stole second before Dave Wellington’s comebacker to the mound went off Dostie’s glove to second baseman Shawn Henderson to score Rodden.

“I should have fielded that pretty easily and I would have held the runner at third. It was my fault,” said Dostie, who fanned nine and walked three in an impressive outing.

Lambert scored when McGlinn dropped Jim Becvar’s two-out fly ball.

“I thought it was going to drop in front of me, but it hung up a little bit. I was running in and I took my eye off it. It hit the heel of my glove,” said McGlinn.

Becvar’s double in the fifth was Saint Joseph’s only hit.

Craig Harvey and Aaron Brideau had two hits each for Husson.

In the nightcap, Saint Joseph’s erupted for four first-inning runs on a one-out walk to Becvar and five straight hits off Keith Simmons.

Becvar stole second and scored on Rusty Rutherford’s single before LaCasse followed with a booming triple to center.

“That’s the best I’ve hit a ball all year,” said LaCasse, who scored on McIntosh’s base hit.

Lucas Hannigan and Rodden (RBI) capped the rally with singles.

Rutherford’s two-run triple keyed a three-run second inning against reliever Kyle Mathieu.

McIntosh had a three-run homer, a pair of run-scoring singles, and a sacrifice fly for 20-14 Saint Joseph’s.

Brad Wheaton and Rutherford had three hits each and combined for five RBIs. Rodden and LaCasse had two hits and two RBIs each, and Charlie Buker spaced six hits over five innings for the win.

Josh Ferguson had a two-run single for 17-18 Husson.
