A Bangor man said he was attacked by four other men and a pit bull in downtown Bangor on Tuesday afternoon after he had confronted a woman who he said had insulted him.

One of the men, Justin R. Andrews, 19, of Bangor was summoned in connection with the alleged assault. The others involved in the incident weren’t identified.

The injured man had cuts and scrapes on his arms and elbows he said he received when he was pushed down and punched and kicked. He also had a 2-inch cut on the back of his head, which the man told police came from the pit bull.

The 47-year-old man told Officer Erik Tall that he had just gotten off the bus by Pickering Square shortly before 2 p.m. when a woman behind a downtown cafe began hurling insults at him. He later told Det. Paul Colley that he got close to the woman and raised his fists, telling her “Look lady, take the first swing.”

Then four to five men who had been nearby began attacking him, forcing him to the ground and pummeling him, he said.

Justin R. Andrews, 19, of Bangor admitted to taking part in the assault, but told police that they had stepped in to stop the other man from assaulting the woman after hearing the man claim he was going to smash her teeth out. Andrews was summoned on a charge of assault.

Jamie Varga, 40, called Bangor police late Tuesday night to report that she had been forcibly removed from a residence where she had been drinking and was no longer welcome, but it was Varga who ended up in police custody.

Varga called police to her Palm Street apartment at 11:31 p.m. Tuesday to complain about the treatment she had received when she was removed from a Forest Avenue home. About 40 minutes later, she called police again.

The second time, Officer Russell Twaddell went to her apartment and Varga claimed she had been threatened by the people on Forest Avenue, even though she hadn’t been in contact with them since the last time Twaddell had spoken with her.

Twaddell returned to Varga’s Palm Street apartment for a third, and final visit, an hour later, this visit at the request of a neighbor who reported that Varga was being loud. Before leaving the second time, Twaddell had issued Varga a disorderly conduct warning after he heard her banging on the floor and slamming things around.

Twaddell arrested Varga on a charge of disorderly conduct.
