Lewiston settles dispute over sexual harassment

LEWISTON – The city has settled an ongoing legal battle with a former police crime analyst who claimed she was sexually harassed by the police chief.

The city and Kathi Levesque agreed to an out-of-court settlement this week that brings the 21/2-year dispute to a close. Lawyers declined to disclose terms of the settlement.

Levesque filed a claim with the Maine Human Rights Commission in 1999 charging that Lewiston Police Chief William Welch and Lt. David Chamberlain had subjected her to sexual harassment and discrimination. The commission last year rejected Levesque’s claims, but she told the city she still intended to sue unless an out-of-court settlement could be reached.
