Reservations are still available, if you choose, but you can plan your afternoon and evening any way you wish to be part of the latest fund-raiser to support our Bangor Symphony Orchestra, which holds the distinction of being the nation’s oldest continuously performing community orchestra.
The BSO invites you to participate in “Joyful Journeys,” its annual Spring Dinner and Auction after its performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony 3-5 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at the Maine Center for the Arts at the University of Maine in Orono.
The after-symphony event begins with hors d’oeuvres at 5:30 p.m.; the silent auction from 5:30 to 7 p.m.; dinner at 6:30 p.m., and the live auction gets under way at 7:30 p.m., all in Wells Commons on the UMaine campus.
The top bidders in the “Joyful Journeys” auction have the opportunity to fly anywhere in Europe, the Caribbean or North America.
Perhaps you’d like to own a Mercedes-Benz or spend two weeks in a medieval French town just one hour from Toulouse. You can, if your bid is right!
You might purchase a one-week stay at a time share near Walt Disney World in Kissimmee, Fla., that sleeps six, take a windjammer cruise, or travel from Montreal to Greenville on a luxury passenger train.
Of course, there is also art for you to purchase by Maine notables such as Forest Hart, George Danby, Daniel Hodermarsky, Nina Jerome, Jacqui Kaufman, Michael Lewis, Elizabeth O’Malley and Mette Watt.
According to Catherine LeClair of the BSO, people can participate in any or all of the events taking place Sunday afternoon and evening.
If you choose to attend the symphony in the afternoon, that’s fine.
If not, you might just want to make your way to Wells Commons and participate in the rest of the events but, LeClair said, “people can also dine on their own, after the symphony, and then come to the auction.”
The charge for the dinner and auction reservation is $35 per person.
The evening’s cuisine will start you thinking about visiting France as you enjoy sole fillets and beef tenderloin medallions with creme brulee.
Admission for the auction, only, is $15 per person, which will be credited toward winning bids if they total $100 or more.
BSO vice president Christine Szal is chairwoman of the auction committee. She believes this event is not only a good way to raise funds to help support this local community treasure, but also a good opportunity to visit with your neighbors and have a lot of fun at the same time.

Donna Wilson hopes Bucksport residents living along a route that covers Central Street to Bucksmills Road to Turkey Path and Millvale Road are clearing out their garages, attics, basements, closets and cupboards this week.
That is because Bucksport Community Concerns is sponsoring a 10-mile Neighborhood Yard Sale at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 4, along that route in Bucksport.
BCC requests that those families taking part donate 10 percent of their earnings to Bucksport Community Concerns to help neighbors in need.
If you have questions or need more information, call Wilson at 469-2623.
If you do not have your tickets already, you might want to make sure you get them so you won’t miss either of these two very special events.
To help Brewer Middle School celebrate its 75th anniversary, nationally known recording artists David Mallett and Dan Seals will be featured in concert during May.
Mallett, a Maine native, will be featured at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at BMS, 5 Somerset St., Brewer. He has recorded 11 albums, and other Mallett songs have been recorded by such famous singers as Emmylou Harris, Alison Kraus, Peter, Paul and Mary, John Denver and Pete Seeger.
Seals had six Top 40 and four Top Ten hit songs, and his duet with Marie Osmond, “Meet Me in Montana,” won the 1986 CMA Single of the Year Award.
Seals will perform at 8 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at BMS.
Tickets for both concerts are available at The Grasshopper Shop in downtown Bangor or at Brewer Middle School.
Tickets for the Mallett concert are $12 for adults, $10 for children under age 12.

The name is new, but it’s a sure bet the fun will be the same if you and your children attend the fourth annual Spring-O-Rama from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at Sprague’s Nursery & Garden Center on outer Union Street in Bangor.
Formerly known as the Egg-O-Rama, the event, sponsored by Children’s Miracle Network of Eastern Maine Healthcare, features lots of activities and demonstrations to keep kids busy and adults smiling.
At the Spring-O-Rama, youngsters will find a bounce house, a cakewalk, a coloring corner and demonstrations by the Back Door Dance Studio & Karate for Kids.
Young people can also participate in May basket making, face painting and gobble up treats at the concession stands.
Admission is only $2 per child, and adults are welcome free of charge.
All proceeds benefit Children’s Miracle Network of Eastern Maine Healthcare.
