Volunteers recognized

BANGOR – Lt. Robert Welch of the Bangor Police Department was among those honored with a 2 Those Who Care Award from United Way of Eastern Maine and WLBZ 2.

Welch routinely volunteers his off-duty time to worthy causes such as helping raise funds for Special Olympics. He runs in the Law Enforcement Torch Run and coordinates the involvement of the Bangor Police Department.

His dedication to volunteerism rubs off on his family, too. The whole Welch family has made the Soap Box Derby a recipient of their volunteer time for the past two years. He is also a member of the board of directors for the St. Michael’s Center, a social agency for at-risk children; and reads monthly to day-care pupils as part of the Read for Success Program.

Penquis CAP is the 2 Those Who Care Agency of Distinction. The agency provides a wide range of services to the people of Penobscot and Piscataquis counties, from childcare to healthcare services, counseling and fuel assistance.

For the last five years or so, Ervin Huntington has been cooking up good deeds on a regular basis, sharing his time and talents as a cook for a local soup kitchen. He also volunteers with Maine Adaptive Sports, Maine Special Olympics, the Pine Tree Camp for Handicapped Children and Adults, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
