DANBURY, Conn. Saturday, Cathy Knapp’s RBI single in the top of the sixth proved to be the game- and championship-winner as No. 1 Western Connecticut topped Southern Maine of Gorham 3-2 in the Little East Conference championship softball game.

USM, the No. 6 seed, beat No. Plymouth State 3-2 and Western Connecticut 5-3 to get to the final game. The Huskies will wait until Monday for a possible berth in the ECAC Div. III New England tournament.

In the championship game, Katie Wardlow drove in the tying run and scored the winner. Sarah Zaslow, who was named the outstanding player of the tournament, scattered four hits. Katie True and Jessie Becher each hit an RBI single for USM.

In Saturday’s second game, the Huskies pounded out 11 hits, including an RBI double by Sunshine Anders in the second that proved to be the game-winner. True had an RBI groundout in the third.

In Saturday’s first game, Becher doubled home the winning run in the seventh to put the Huskies in the final round. Anders hit a solo homer and Emily Forbes had an RBI. Maria Curran recorded an RBI groundout for Plymouth State.

St. Joseph’s win two in NAIA tourney

At Poultney, Vt. Saturday, the Monks picked up two wins in the NAIA Region X tournament, beating Thomas of Waterville 3-2 and topping UM-Farmington 9-0 to earn a berth in the championship game Sunday.

In Saturday’s first game, St. Joseph’s pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth to hold off the Terriers. Kelly Primo led the Monks with a double and a single. Erin Lovely paced Thomas of Waterville with a triple and two singles.

In Saturday’s second game, Kristen Gaudette spun a two-hit shutout and Courtney Sirois tripled and singled for St. Joseph’s. Heather Marden and Teri Trudell each singled for the Beavers.

Huskies win two

At Gorham Saturday, the Southern Maine Huskies came from behind after blowing a five-run lead to edge Keene State, 8-7, in 10 innings to open a doubleheader.

Southern Maine took the second, 3-2.

In the first game, the Huskies raced out to a 5-0 second-inning lead, only to see the Owls creep back, and eventually grab a 7-6 lead. Southern Maine knotted the score when Ryan Adams doubled, moved to third on an infield error, and came in on Jon Melanson’s single. Adams knocked in the game-winner in the 10th with a two-out, bases-loaded infield single.

In the second game, Andy Lang doubled home a run and scored on a double by Darrin Daniels for USM.

Derek Meader provided a sacrifice fly for the Huskies. Jason Thibodeau picked up the win.

At Boston Sunday, the Huskies rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth to break a 5-5 tie and hold off the Beacons.

Tyler Delorme opened the inning with a single. After a sacrifice bunt by Darrin Daniels, Craig Gureckis was walked intentionally. Delorme and Gureckis advanced on a double-steal. Peter L’Italien singled in the winning run as Delrome beat the throw to the plate. Colin Loveless capped the scoring with an RBI groundout.

Amerst sweeps Colby

At Amherst, Mass., Jeff Leduc and Andy Kerns turned in solid pitching efforts for the Lord Jeffs as Amherst beat Colby 3-0 and 9-1 in a Saturday doubleheader.

In game one, catcher Joe Katuska went 3-for-3 with an RBI double, a solo home run, and a single for 19-15 Amherst.

Daniel Deacon singled twice for 8-19 Colby.

In game two, J.R. Drabick had a double, two singles and three RBIs to lead the Lord Jeffs. John Brody had a double, two singles and two RBIs.

B.L. Lippert and Jonathan Lord each doubled for Colby.

Football

Colorado coach revokes scholarships

BOULDER, Colo. – Four Colorado football players had their scholarships revoked after attending an off-campus recruiting party that was the center of a rape investigation.

University spokesman David Plati confirmed Saturday that coach Gary Barnett revoked the scholarships of Marques Harris and three other players. Plati declined to identify the other players.

Plati said Barnett informed the players of his decision to revoke the scholarships in late January .

On Friday, Harris, Allen Mackey, Ron Monteilh and Corey Alexander were charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
