Lately the news from Washington County seems to be anything but positive; unemployment spiraling out of control, prescription drug abuse reaching epidemic proportions, crimes against persons and property escalating.

Is there anything good to be said for our county? You bet! Today I had the pleasure of watching the future leaders of our county (our state, our country) strut their stuff, and they did it with style, poise, and sophistication. The Washington County Children’s Chorus, under the direction of Christine Guy, sponsored by the Washington County Children’s Program and the Child and Youth Board of Washington County, graced the chancel of Centre Street Congregational Church with their presence. This group of 39 kids are amazing.

Their talent is remarkable, as is the talent of the 10 youth who stood before 350 to 400 people and performed on their violins. pianos, flutes and harps, or dared to put their inspiring poetry to music.

This is youth at their best. The secret, I’m convinced, is the parents, grandparents, and other adults who take an interest in these kid’s lives, and are committed to encouraging, guiding and gently pushing them forward, all the while loving them unconditionally. Thank you to all the adults who have given the gift of time and understanding to these kids. This is the positive stuff our county is made of.
