Black Bears cruise to victory over Mules Both teams get something out of matchup

WATERVILLE – Everybody in attendance Wednesday at Coombs Field realized the baseball game between the University of Maine and Colby College was a mismatch.

That didn’t prevent players on both sides from taking advantage of the opportunity.

The Division I Black Bears stroked five home runs during a 10-run second inning while cruising to a 19-5 victory over the Division III White Mules.

For UMaine, now 32-12, the contest provided a chance to get some pitchers much-needed work and some backup players some valuable playing time.

“I thought we swung the bat pretty well,” said UMaine coach Paul Kostacopoulos. “Everybody played. [The reserves] practice just as hard as everybody else. They deserve a chance to play.”

Part-time first baseman Pat Tobin paced the Bears, lining solo home runs in the second and fourth innings to go with a double and another RBI.

“I think it’s valuable for us,” said Tobin, whose Bears had thumped Colby 20-2 earlier this season in Orono. “We can come in here and work on things that we need to accomplish, get some guys going maybe that are not going too hot, improve ourselves.”

For Colby, which ended the season at 9-22, it was the final home game for the five seniors, including Lucas Cummings of South Paris. Cummings sparked the hosts with a pair of two-run homers and a single.

“It’s been kind of a long year, but, personally, it was a good way to end it,” Cummings said of his 3-for-5 effort. “It’s good experience to play against the D-I players. Usually we can hang with them a little bit, but their bats… they’re pretty good.”

The Bears unleashed a batting barrage in the second inning, during which every UMaine starter scored at least one run. Matt Reynolds stroked an RBI single and a solo home run in the inning, which also included a three-run homer by Joe Drapeau, two-run shots by Simon Williams and Mark Reichley, and a solo blast by Tobin.

“It’s a confidence-builder, definitely,” Tobin said. “It’s nice to get some swings going. You want to get out there and keep hitting it and try to stay within yourself and do what you can.”

Five pitchers worked for UMaine, with relievers Paul Bruder and Adam Labelle each throwing two scoreless innings. Starter Greg Creek (3-1) and Aaron Smith worked two innings each and Ryan Harris pitched the ninth.

UMaine led 11-2 heading into the fourth, which turned into a seven-run uprising. Tobin’s solo homer, a run-scoring double by Reynolds and RBI singles by Williams and Jesse Carlton were the big blows.

Reynolds finished with a homer, a double, a single, and four RBIs, while Brett Ouellette provided two singles and two RBIs. Reichley homered and singled, and Drapeau had four RBIs.

Jon Lord doubled and singled for Colby, and Dan Deacon singled twice. Junior righthander Kevin Presbrey was impressive in relief for the Mules, limiting UMaine to two hits and an unearned run in 5? innings of relief. He retired the last 12 batters he faced.

Sophomore outfielder Pete Saunders of Orland made his first career start for the Bears and scored two runs.

UMaine returns to America East play with a four-game weekend series against Stony Brook at Mahaney Diamond in Orono.
