BANGOR – H.E. Sargent Inc. of Stillwater and WBRC Architects/ Engineers of Bangor have received the 2002 Associated Constructors of Maine Build Award for the design and construction of additions to Bangor High School.
As a team, the architect and the contractor were devoted to developing an aggressive design and construction schedule, which satisfied Bangor High School’s budgetary and schedule constraints.
The project included the completion of a two-story, 15,000-square-foot addition to the math and language departments, an elevated bridge connecting two remote wings, a new elevator, a renovated and expanded library, a renovated and expanded special education department, a new lecture hall with audiovisual systems, an addition to the science wing including labs, an astronomy observatory, renovated bathrooms and site improvements.
The Bangor High School addition was the first approved design-build school construction project implemented under a new law, LD 2311 Alternative Construction Delivery Systems. Although team members faced many challenges, they were able to introduce innovative ideas and solve problems constructively and quickly throughout the project.
The support of Robert Ervin, Bangor school superintendent; craftspeople, supervisors and managers, and the camaraderie of all the people associated with the project helped make it possible.
The design-build team first prepared working foundation drawings and a schedule that allowed for quick procurement of materials and assembly of subcontractor commitments. In addition, H.E. Sargent Inc. donated its time and profit to build the new observatory.
The Build Maine Awards, sponsored by ACM and the Maine Turnpike Authority, raised nearly $3,000 for the ACM Education Foundation.
