BANGOR – John Bapst unleashed an overwhelming offensive attack Friday afternoon, tagging Deer Isle-Stonington pitchers for 21 hits and scoring 27 runs. Ironically, the Crusaders really didn’t need a great deal of offensive production.

Sophomore right-hander Andy Jagels fashioned a nifty four-hitter, striking out 12 along the way to lead John Bapst to a 27-1 Penobscot Valley Conference baseball victory over the Mariners at the Husson College field in Bangor.

MILFORD – Members of the Milford Board of Selectmen went into their meeting Wednesday night facing a proposed budget that would have resulted in a mill rate of $22.88. But after making significant cuts, the board brought its final budget in with a rate of $21.12.

The mill rate is the number of dollars of tax per $1,000 of property valuation.

“We made, on our side of the budget, numerous changes,” said Town Manager Bruce Locke.

25 years ago – May 9, 1977

If you journeyed to the University of Maine at Orono’s Mahaney Diamond Saturday to watch offensive fireworks between the host Black Bears and the University of New Hampshire, you’d have been better off staying home and waiting for the Fourth of July.

Behind back-to-back shutouts by right-hander Barry LaCasse and southpaw John Sawyer, the Bears came away with the sweep, 5-0 and 2-0, to boost their record to 20-7.

BANGOR – Bangor High School’s Class of 1972 reunion is planning its fifth reunion, and has scheduled it for July 30 this year. Anyone interested in attending is asked to contact Sue Feeney.

50 years ago – May 9, 1952

ORONO – The annual May ball, sponsored by the board of directors of the Community House corporation, will be held Friday evening in the Orono High School auditorium.

The program for grades 1-3 will be held from 7-8 p.m. and for grades 4-6 from 8:30 to 9:45 p.m. Music will be furnished by Madolyn Duffy and her orchestra.

ORONO – The Orono-Old Town Branch of the American Association of University Women met Wednesday evening at South Estabrooke Hall. Mrs. Frederic T. Martin, vice president, presided at the business meeting.

It was reported that the Women’s Legislative Council will meet May 15 at the University of Maine in the Louis Oakes room. Luncheon and tea reservations should be made with Mrs. Albert D. Nutting, College Heights, as soon as possible.

100 years ago – May 9, 1902

OLD TOWN – The political situation is growing decidedly intense in Old Town. There was some torrid talk about town on Thursday morning when it was learned that the Republican committee had decided to hold the county convention caucus by wards, each ward to have two delegates, thus splitting the great sheriff fight into as many different scraps.

BREWER – The crew trenching for the gas main has carried the work up North Main street as far as Chamberlain. It is understood that the main will be carried only as far south as the Dirigo mill this year.
