BURLINGTON, Vt. – Liz Borawski’s RBI single in the third inning plated the only run of the game Friday as Hartford beat the University of Maine 1-0 in the first round of the America East Tournament at the University of Vermont.
The Black Bears take on Albany today in a 1:30 p.m. elimination game. Should UMaine advance, it would play the Boston University-Hartford loser at 4 p.m.
Liz Nadeau singled with one out, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Borawski’s single to left.
Andi Miller pitched a four-hitter, striking out seven and walking none, for the Hawks. Nadeau paced Hartford with three singles.
Erica Sobel singled twice for UMaine behind loser Candace Jaegge, who scattered eight hits. The Bears were unable to come up with clutch hits when runners were in scoring position.

Saint Joseph’s 5-5, Dominican 0-3
At Orangeburg, N.Y., Rusty Rutherford’s three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth wiped out a 3-2 deficit and gave Saint Joseph’s College of Standish its first NAIA Northeast Region X championship with a sweep in the best-of-three series.
Saint Joseph’s won the opener 5-0.
The Monks have advanced to next week’s sectional tournament. The pairings, times and site haven’t been determined.
Charlie Buker, Jeremy Dalton and Brent Dan combined on a five-hitter.
Dan pitched a five-hit shutout in the opener, striking out seven and walking two.
Lucas Hannigan had a pair of doubles and a single and drove in two runs while Andy Exley and Rutherford had two singles each.

At Mansfield, Conn., Chris Miller rocked a pair of homers and drove in four runs to lead the No. 3 Colonials past No. 2 Southern Maine in the first round of the Little East Conference tournament.
Darrin Daniels drove in the Huskies’ first run with a bases-loaded single. Craig Gureckis and Tyler Delorme traded RBI singles in the sixth.
