BANGOR – The more he pitches, the more he looks like a senior.
Sophomore righthander Josh Young extended his personal scoreless innings streak to 20 and notched his second straight shutout victory by outdueling Brewer starter Chad Gomm in Bangor’s 1-0 win in a classic confrontation.
Young was all business on a brisk and breezy night at Mansfield Stadium as he allowed only five hits while striking out six batters and walking none.
“I definitely felt that this was a game we had to win,” said Young, who is now 4-0 for the 8-2 Rams.
Young threw 67 of his 93 pitches (72 percent) for strikes while relying primarily on a constantly moving fastball and an occasional cut curveball.
“Josh was … outstanding. He knows what pressure’s all about, and when the going gets tough, he gets more gritty and determined and he pitches better,” said Bangor coach Jeff Fahey.
Things were toughest for Young in the fifth when Brewer loaded the bases with one out on two singles and a hit batter. Bangor’s defense notched an out at home on a fielder’s choice grounder and Young bore down to end the threat with a strikeout.
“I just got mad and threw it hard after that happened,” Young said.
Brewer had runners at second in each of the last four innings, but was kept away from the big hit.
“We didn’t help ourselves out in some situations by not swinging the bat, but Young kept the ball down and changed speeds on us,” said coach David Morris, whose Witches are now 6-3. “For a sophomore in that situation, that’s a heck of a job.”
Bangor received four straight one-out singles by Kevin Proctor, Chris Bombardier, Tom Twombly, and Buddy Nickerson in the first. Three of the four didn’t make it out of the infield, but the one that did was a big one as Twombly’s single down the right field line scored Proctor.
“It was a curveball down and away and I just kept my head down,” Twombly said. “I’ve been having trouble hitting curveballs all year and I know Gomm has a pretty good one, so I just tried to keep my head in and drove it.”
It was a rare hit in a rare at-bat for Twombly, a senior transfer from Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield who was given the start at designated hitter.
“Coach [John] Tennett and coach [Rob] Gould get the credit for that because I had trouble all day coming up with a lineup. I left the DH to them,” Fahey said.
“I was just taking my hacks in BP and just trying to make sure I was ready whenever I got my chance,” Twombly said. “I got it today and that’s all I can ask for.”
Gomm (2-2) was a tough-luck loser in his second straight outing despite throwing 51 of 74 pitches for strikes in a five-hitter. He also notched seven strikeouts and no walks.
“He’s two hits from being undefeated,” Morris said about his junior lefthander.
