Taxpayer group launches another petition drive

The leader of a group that wants to cap property taxes in Maine has followed through with her promise to keep on trying.

Carol Palesky’s Maine Taxpayers Action Network filed paperwork to start the referendum process with the Secretary of State’s Office on Monday. Palesky has raised $25,000 and needs to double that amount in the next 30 days to get the referendum off the ground, she said. It would be Palesky’s third attempt to get a tax cap proposal on the statewide ballot.

Palesky’s latest try came up 2,812 signatures short after thousands of signatures were deemed invalid, including those collected by a mystery man who lied about his identity.

She blasted Maine Secretary of State Dan Gwadosky, calling him an “evil-doer” because his office’s decision disenfranchised more than 40,000 registered voters whose signatures were valid.
