AUGUSTA – The state Department of Corrections is investigating the suicide of an inmate at the Kennebec County Jail after a police report found that jail officers could have prevented the death.
Jason Rozell, 24, of Whitefield was found dead with a bedsheet wrapped around his neck on April 8, three days after his mother told jail officials that he was suicidal.
A report released Tuesday by Augusta police Lt. Dennis Passmore concluded that jail officials violated procedures. Denise Lord of the Department of Corrections confirmed that an internal investigation of the suicide was under way. She declined to comment until the probe was completed.
