Abbe Museum makes archaeological field school scholarship available

BAR HARBOR – A scholarship for the Abbe Museum’s archaeological field school is available to all Maine Native Americans and to eastern Maine college or high school students age 17 and older. This year’s field school, scheduled Sept. 15-20, will explore a site on an island near Mount Desert Island.

The scholarship recipient will have tuition, lodging and meals provided. The deadline for applications is June 15.

During the field school, participants will work alongside archaeologists to investigate a site that has been damaged by both vandalism and erosion. The site will be reached by a short boat ride. They also will work in the Abbe’s new research lab participating in analysis procedures. The field school will model the steps of the scientific archaeological process, including discussion, field excavation, lab analysis and interpretation.

Participation in the field school is open to the public, with no previous archaeological experience necessary. The number of people who can participate is limited and preregistration is required. The cost of the school will be $300 for Abbe members and $350 for nonmembers. The cost does not include lodging or meals; the Abbe will provide area lodging information.

The museum also needs volunteers for both the new Abbe in downtown Bar Harbor and the historic, seasonal museum at Sieur de Monts Spring. Orientation meetings for new and current volunteers are scheduled 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, May 20, and 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday, May 21, at the downtown location, 26 Mount Desert St.

Anyone interested in attending the orientation meetings is asked to contact the museum in advance.
