Former University of Maine basketball star Cindy Blodgett’s WNBA career hit a major speed bump on Tuesday as the Sacramento Monarchs requested waivers on her in order to trim their roster.
The move turns Blodgett into a free agent who will be able to sign with any interested team.
The Monarchs also waived Beverly Williams, which reduces their roster to 14 players.
The Monarchs began their training camp April 29 and have played one exhibition contest, a 74-60 loss Saturday to the Portland Fire.
Blodgett played 11 minutes in that contest, going 1-for-6 from the floor (including 1-for-4 on 3-pointers) and turning the ball over twice. She scored three points.
Blodgett, a 5-foot-9 Clinton native, led Lawrence High School of Fairfield to four straight state Class A championships and was the catalyst as UMaine earned four straight bids to the NCAA tournament. The tourney bids were the first in UMaine history.
She graduated from UMaine in 1998 with 3,005 career points and was the first sophomore to lead the NCAA in scoring when she averaged 27 points per game. She also led the nation in scoring as a junior with a 27.6 ppg average.
Blodgett was drafted by the Cleveland Rockers as the No. 6 pick overall in 1998, but was never able to crack the Rockers’ lineup.
The next summer she was traded for center Quacy Barnes, who was subsequently cut by the Rockers, to the Monarchs.
In four years in the WNBA she averaged 2.5 points per game in 65 contests. Blodgett played an average of 6.5 minutes per game in those games. She made 34.8 percent of her 3-point field goal attempts and 61.5 percent of her free throw tries.
The WNBA opens its regular season June 1.
