Shorey sets national junior 20K mark

KENOSHA, Wis. – Ben Shorey of Ellsworth smashed a 10-year-old national junior racewalking record when he covered 20 kilometers in 1 hour, 31 minutes, 34.1 seconds.

Shorey, a 19-year-old freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, averaged 7:30 per mile and pared 1:53 off the existing mark over the 12.2-mile distance. The old record was set by Tim Seaman, who is now a U.S. national team member.

Shorey has qualified for both the Junior Nationals and Junior World Championships, which will be held this summer.

Also qualifying for the Junior Nationals was Anne Favolise of Columbia who also competes for Wisconsin-Parkside. She turned in a 51:08 time in the 10K racewalk.
