Peas be with you

Getting children to eat their vegetables is never an easy task, but the newest issue of Martha Stewart Kids magazine may make it a little easier. The article “More Peas Please” is full of recipes that may coax the most stubborn veggie hater out of her shell – Poka-Dot Pea Soup, B.L.Pea Sandwiches and Pepperoni Pea-za, to name a few. The magazine costs $4.75 and is on newsstands now.

Taste of Orono

It’s time for the Orono Historical Society’s annual tasting bee, a chance to sample the wares from a variety of local restaurants while supporting a worthy cause. This year, the proceeds will be used to help restore the former Birch Street School, which houses the thrift shop and serves as a meeting place for many of the town’s community groups. The event will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, at the Asa Adams School gymnasium (behind the fire station). Tickets cost $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 through 12, and admission is free for children 5 and younger. For information or tickets, call Marlene Doucette at 866-2597.

Claws for celebration

The Maine Lobster Festival will be featured on the Food Network next week as part of its 13-part series “All-American Festivals.” The segment, which airs at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, will feature scenes from the 2001 festival in Rockland, including a cook-off highlighting local chefs. Producer Tom Giesen said the crew came away with “great memories and full stomachs.” This year’s festival will take place from Wednesday, July 31, through Sunday, Aug. 4.
