Metivier and offense push OT by Broncs Victory cheers up Indians

HAMPDEN – The way Sarah Metivier was feeling Thursday, the last thing she wanted to do was get on a school bus and play seven innings of softball.

It wasn’t just Metivier, Old Town High’s ace pitcher, who felt that way. The whole Old Town team was feeling down. The school had just gone through a hard-hitting, two-day drunk driving awareness program, and the girls were dragging before their game against Hampden Academy.

So the Indians did the only thing they could. Metivier threw a one-hitter and Old Town pounded out 12 hits, including a two-run triple by Jessica Paul, en route to a 5-1 victory over Hampden at the Weatherbee Complex.

“We’ve had a rough couple of days,” Paul said. “We didn’t have practice yesterday and the team hadn’t been together so to get it together today was good.”

The Indians go to 10-2 and Metivier improved to 8-2.

The senior pitcher, who nearly didn’t pitch with a headache and had a DH hitting for her (Metivier usually bats), had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning. She gave up two walks, both in the second, and struck out six.

Her biggest strikeout came in the second. After giving up two straight walks to Sara Lozito and Jillian Yamartino, Cheryl Morris reached first on a fielder’s choice bunt (the Indians forced Lozito out at third base). After a groundout Erika Veinote fouled off two pitches to stay alive on a full count but went down swinging to end the inning.

“I was just working them inside-outside,” Metivier said. “[Catcher Meghan King] was moving inside and outside, just trying to mix it up, because [Veinote] was on it and we didn’t want to her to get a hold of one.”

Meanwhile, Old Town took a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning, where the Indians piled on three more runs. Paul’s triple to deep centerfield scored Jill Ouellette and Renee Thibodeau, who had both singled.

Paul was behind 1-2 in the count when she belted a fastball.

“It was a good pitch, kind of right down the middle so I got lucky on that one,” Paul said.

Five Old Town players had two or more hits. Liz Saucier was 3-for-4 with three singles and an RBI. Jill Ouellette hit a triple and a single. Emelie Richard, the DH, singled twice and drove in a run.

Hampden’s Katie Lindemann got the only hit and run off Metivier. She smacked a single into right field, advanced to second on a Kristina Spaulding groundout, and scored on a throwing error.

“Sarah’s a great pitcher,” Hampden coach Rodney Wells said. “She did a nice job. She’s tough. We didn’t get much off her the last time we faced her, either.”

Although the Broncos (3-7) only managed one hit, they did look sharp in the field, completing three double plays.
