Road bill would mean millions more for Maine

WASHINGTON – The U.S. House of Representatives has approved legislation to restore at least $21.5 million in formula highway funds for Maine during the 2003 fiscal year. Overall, the Highway Funding Restoration Act (HR 3694) would offset $4.4 billion of a nationwide cut in highway funding contained in the Bush administration’s budget for next year.

Additionally, the bill would ensure the release of funding for three Maine projects that have been held up within the U.S. Department of Transportation, according to U.S. Rep. John Baldacci. The projects are $1 million for the Brewer waterfront development; $500,000 for an Interstate 295 connector in Portland; and $4.5 million for continuing efforts to extend Interstate 95 in Aroostook County.

Baldacci said in a press release that the bipartisan legislation would bring the national total up to the level outlined in the last major highway bill.

While pleased with the passage, the 2nd District representative said more needed to be done.

“Maine’s transportation needs are significant, and the backlog of roads and bridges in need of repair continually grows. Harsh winter weather and extensive use by both tourists and heavy trucks take their toll on our roads,” Baldacci said. “The funding level we are setting here today is a floor, not a ceiling. I am supporting this legislation as a first step to ensure that the infrastructure needs of communities in Maine and throughout the country can be met.”
