BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Mike Collar and Mike MacDonald continued their domination of America East opponents Friday.
The sophomore righthanders pitched back-to-back shutouts, lifting the University of Maine to a doubleheader sweep of Binghamton in a conference twinbill at NYSEG Stadium.
Coach Paul Kostacopoulos’ 36-14 Black Bears, who are guaranteed at least a No. 2 seed in next week’s America East tournament at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, won the opener 10-0 and took the second game 3-0.
Scarborough’s Collar (8-2) held the Bearcats to four hits, establishing a UMaine record by pitching his eighth consecutive complete game. He lowered his team-best earned run average to 2.80 with his third shutout of the season.
Collar’s eighth straight complete game breaks the mark established in 1984 by former UMaine star and major leaguer Bill Swift of South Portland. Collar struck out nine and did not issue a walk.
UMaine, now 16-6 in league play, can clinch the America East regular-season championship today with any combination of a Black Bear victory or a loss by Vermont.
Binghamton (17-34, 8-12) was eliminated from postseason contention by virtue of Friday’s losses.
Friday marked the first time since 1998 that UMaine pitchers had pitched shutouts in a doubleheader. The last to do it were Tom Koutrouba and Eric O’Brien in consecutive 1-0 wins over Hartford.
In Friday’s first game, freshman Aaron Izaryk stroked four singles in the Bears’ 16-hit onslaught. Joe Drapeau knocked in two runs with a double and two singles.
UMaine, which posted 24 hits in the doubleheader, scored three runs in the first and piled on seven in the fifth. Brett Ouellette hit a two-run home run in the fifth and singled for the Bears, while Alain Picard and Mike Ross each added two singles and an RBI.
Kyle Loucks singled twice for Binghamton.
In the second game, Aaron Young lined a two-run triple in the fifth inning that provided a bit of cushion for MacDonald.
MacDonald had been the beneficiary of only one run in his previous three starts, combined.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Ross drew a one-out walk, stole second and took third on a high throw by the catcher, then scored on an errant throw from the outfield.
In the fifth, Mark Reichley and Jesse Carlton hit back-to-back singles and rode home on Young’s triple.
MacDonald had to pitch his way out of trouble in the seventh. T.J. Kowalchuk and Tyler McGonigal stroked two-out singles, bringing the potential tying run to the plate.
Pinch hitter Jacob Thiel grounded out to shortstop for the final out.
Young also singled for UMaine and Carlton singled twice.
Kowalchuk and McGonigal poked two singles each for the Bearcats, who scratched out six hits.
