Shead High School

EASTPORT – Principal Jeanne R. Bishop announced honor parts for the Class of 2002 at Shead High School. Commencement will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 13.

Karla McPhail, daughter of Tammy and Peter McPhail of Edmunds, has been named co-valedictorian for the Class of 2002. She will attend Thomas College in Waterville to study accounting.

She has been president of her class for three years, editor in chief of the yearbook, co-president of the National Honor Society and group leader of Maine Youth Voices. She has captained the girls soccer team for two years, has managed girls basketball and has been a member of the softball and tennis teams. She has also participated with the chess team, Student Senate, Travel Club and Prom Committee.

McPhail’s community activities include: Eastport for Pride, Operation Santa, Red Cross Blood Drive and the Shead Food Drive. She has worked at Eastport Lobster and Fish and Eastern Plumbing and Heating.

Her academic honors include: the Maine High School Teachers’ Scholarship from Thomas College, the Principals’ Award, Highest Class Average, the Mount Holyoke Book Award, the Seven Sisters Book Award, and awards in algebra, Spanish, world history, biology, marine resources, yearbook, Microsoft access and chemistry.

Kristen Lingley, daughter of James and Linda Lingley of Eastport, will share co-valedictorian honors with McPhail for the Class of 2002. Lingley will attend Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, N.H., for a one-year course, then plans to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study genetic or biomedical engineering.

She has served as president of her class and has been a member of the student senate, Travel Club, Magnificent Liars Drama Club, and the girls basketball team. Her community service activities include: the Youth Empowerment Project, Maine Youth Voices, Eastport Recreation Board and Teen Advocacy Against Tobacco.

She has been a Hoby Student representative and a Close-Up participant in Washington, D.C., and works with the Drug and Alcohol Prevention Program at Pleasant Point. She has received awards in accounting, biology, Spanish, marketing and advertising, algebra, world history, English and analysis.

Lingley will be employed by The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor this summer, working on drug-induced obesity.

Rachel E. Theriault, daughter of Paul and April Theriault of Eastport has been named salutatorian for the Class of 2002. She will attend the University of Maine at Presque Isle to study athletic training.

She has been active in academic activities as a member of the National Honor Society, U.S. Academic Decathlon, Math League, Magnificent Liars Drama Club, Maine Youth Voices and Student Senate. She has served as treasurer and vice-president of her class, was athletic editor of the yearbook, and served on the prom committee.

Theriault also managed baseball, softball, and boys basketball and was a member of the tennis and golf teams. In addition to working at the Peavey Memorial Library, her community service activities include: the Shead Booster’s Club, Red Cross Blood Drives, the MS Walk, Operation Santa and the Shead Food Drive.

First honor part is Evan W. Smith, son of Peter and Vicki Smith of Dennysville. He plans to attend Washington County Technical College in Calais to study computer programming and networking.

He has been station manager of WSHD 91.7 Tiger Radio, national Honor Society parliamentarian, and yearbook production chief. Among his community service activities are: Red Cross Blood Drive, Eastport for Pride, Edmunds School Cabin Fever Carnival and painting murals for the Eastport millennium celebration.

Second honor part is Mindy Preston, daughter of Stephen and Linda Preston of Edmunds. She will attend St. Joseph’s College in Standish to study pharmacy.

She has served as class treasurer for three years and is a member of the National Honor Society, student senate, yearbook staff, prom committee and travel club. Elected Miss Tiger 2002 by the Shead student body, she has played girls basketball, soccer and softball. Her community service activities include: the Red Cross Blood Drive, Operation Santa, the Shead Food Drive, and volunteering at Edmunds Consolidated School. She is participating in a work-study program at Havey & Wilson Pharmacy in Eastport.

Third honor part is Jessica L. Mann, daughter of David Mann of Eastport. She will attend the University of New England in Biddeford where she will study psychology.

She is the winner of the 2002 Good Citizenship Award, has participated in Travel Club, yearbook, Maine Youth Voices, and the prom committee. She is co-president of the National Honor Society and secretary of her class. Her community service activities include: the Red Cross Blood Drive, Operation Santa, and the Shead Food Drive. She is employed at Peavey Memorial Library.

Fourth honor part is Jaime Diffin, daughter of Ralph and Carmela DeWitt of Eastport. She plans to attend New England College in Henniker, N.H. where she will study psychology.

A recipient of the Maine Scholars Achievement Award, Diffin has been active in Maine Youth Voices, Academic Decathlon, Shead Travel Club, Magnificent Liars Drama Club and yearbook. She managed baseball and boys basketball and participated in community activities such as: Operation Santa, Eastport for Pride, and the Shead Food Drive. She is employed at Motel East and was on the local office staff of Final Stretch Productions.
