Summer reading and writing program

OLD TOWN – The University of Maine’s Summer Reading and Writing Program offers instruction and fun activities for children needing extra help in literacy skills. Offered by the College of Education and Human Development for more than 20 years, this summer’s program is designed for children ages 5-12 and will be held July 3-26 at the Herbert Sargent School in Old Town. Sessions run Monday-Friday from 9-11:30 a.m.

Space is available for approximately 60 children, who will receive instruction in small group settings and individual tutoring. The staff is comprised of experienced teachers completing graduate studies in literacy at UMaine. The biggest benefit of the program, said Jane Wellman-Little, UM literacy instructor, is that the children receive one-on-one specialized help.

The cost of the program, including tuition, all materials and snacks, is $200. Registration deadline is May 31. For information, call Theresa McMannus, 581-2438, or e-mail her at theresa.mcmannus @umit.maine.edu.

FAA aviation camp

BANGOR – The Federal Aviation Administration will hold the eighth Aviation Career Education Camp 2002 beginning June 23 at Eastern Maine Technical College in Bangor. Sponsors for the camp include EMTC, Maine Air National Guard and Telford Aviation.

The coed camp will accommodate 35 students who are interested in learning about careers in aviation and the high school academic preparation required for these high paying jobs.

During the camp, students will learn leadership and teamwork. Hands-on activities include model rocket building and launching, plotting navigation courses, flight instruction lessons and flight simulator experiences.

The weeklong overnight camp offers students opportunities for flights in aircraft such as KC-135 refueling aircraft, UH-60 helicopter, C208 Caravan and float planes.

To be eligible for the camp, students must be entering grades 9-12 in September, and have a strong interest in aviation. The $400 camp tuition includes food, housing, transportation, hats, T-shirts and other miscellaneous expenses. Financial assistance may be available.

To request an application, call Malcolm Brydon at 368-4847. Application deadline is May 25.
