Shop ‘n Save Golf Classic to benefit Read for Success

HERMON – The Shop ‘n Save Golf Classic to benefit United Way of Eastern Maine’s Read for Success Program will be Wednesday, June 5, at Hermon Meadows Golf Club.

The tournament format is an 18-hole four-person scramble. The entry fee is $75 per person, which includes golf cart, giveaways, refreshments on the course and a premium steak and chicken barbecue lunch.

The tournament is co-sponsored by the Bangor Daily News, Pepsi and Oakhurst Dairy.

“We are pleased to have Shop ‘n Save and its partners sponsoring this tournament and helping us to support Read for Success. These volunteers are helping to ensure that all children develop a love for reading, which research has shown is a key to future success in school and life,” said Jeff Wahlstrom, president of United Way of Eastern Maine.

The auction includes weekend packages for two, golf equipment, 100 gallons of fuel, jewelry and much more. Any participant who records a hole-in-one will win a GMC Jimmy courtesy of Varney’s GMC. More than $5,000 in additional awards and prizes will be given away.

Read for Success, including Born to Read, aims to give children in eastern Maine the best start possible to ensure a bright future by engaging them in literacy. The goal is to have thousands of individuals from the region reading to children by matching childcare centers, after-school programs, and classrooms with volunteers to read to children.

Currently 112 volunteers are reading, and more than 6,000 books have been collected and distributed to area children.
