BREWER – In two earlier softball showdowns, the Bangor Rams and Brewer Witches had waged low-scoring battles, with the Rams scoring late in both to post 1-0 and 2-1 wins.

Fans looking for more of the same on Thursday night didn’t find it, and they had plenty of players to blame.

Senior pitcher Jen Jimmo continued her mastery of the Witches, taking a no-hitter into the fifth before settling for a two-hitter and a 9-0 win.

In three wins over the Witches this season Jimmo has allowed just three runs and seven hits. The Rams improved to 12-3, while Brewer completed its regular-season at 12-4.

The Rams received hits from seven different players en route to a 12-hit barrage. They scored early (two in the first), often (one in the third, four in the fifth, one in the sixth) and late (another in the seventh).

“I think were really excited to play,” said senior Rachael Dube, who smacked a triple in the first, added two singles, and drove in two runs. “They beat Old Town twice, and we needed to show that we’re as good as Old Town and we’re as good as Brewer.”

Jimmo’s complete-game effort was a picture of efficiency, as she allowed just three base runners and threw just 59 pitches. Of those offerings, 49 were strikes.

Jimmo recorded just one strikeout, but her defense committed just one error.

“I’m pretty much a groundball pitcher,” Jimmo said. “I have my defense behind me, and they’ve been behind me [the whole year].”

Bangor coach Lisa Richards was impressed by her pitcher’s performance.

“She keeps the ball low, and she’s got a lot of confidence in the defense behind her,” Richards said. “She puts it in there, and the thing is, she had a strike stretch going – 10 strikes in a row – where they have to swing the bats. She makes ’em swing the bats.”

Bangor got two hits, three runs and two RBIs from senior Megan Huckins, and two hits apiece from Meghan Chase and Stephanie Chase.

Richards was encouraged by the offensive display.

“We haven’t been hitting real well. Nobody has, really, in the league,” Richards said. “But today they came out swinging the bats. So I was pleased.”

Huckins said one of the things the Rams did well was to keep playing hard when they gave Jimmo a two-run cushion in the first.

“We knew that Brewer is an excellent team and they can come back off a lead, so we had to had to play every inning like it was 0-0,” Huckins said.

Brewer’s Anna Corey broke up the no-hit bid in the fifth when she hit a grounder that second baseman Jen Wright had to dive to corral. Her hurried throw was off the mark, and the play was scored a hit.

Brewer pitcher Sherri Capponi, who dropped to 10-4 with the loss, added a line-drive single to right in the seventh.

Brewer was playing its fourth game of the week, and was coming off a big win over Old Town on Wednesday.

Coach Kelly Cookson said her team has to look ahead instead of dwelling on the loss.

“We’ve just got to go with it prepare for playoffs,” she said.
