HOULTON – Honor parts for the Class of 2002 have been announced by Principal Michael W. Chadwick. Last chapel will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, June 3, at the Houlton High School auditorium.

Commencement exercises will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at the John Millar Arena.

Kathleen F. Cummings, daughter of Sandy and Leigh Cummings Jr. of Houlton, has been named valedictorian for the Class of 2002. She will attend Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering in Needham, Mass., to study biomedical engineering and research.

She received the Maine Scholar Achievement Award and the University of Rochester Humanities and Social Science Award for academic excellence during her junior year. She has received various recognitions, such as student of the month, English Award in grade nine, Principal’s List for all A’s and perfect attendance for all four years of high school.

She was the state science fair winner the past two years in the area of chemistry and physics. With the fourth highest score on her PSATs in Maine as a high school junior, she was recognized this past year as a National Merit Finalist.

Cummings was a member of the school’s choir in her junior year, and has been active in the school’s drama program. She received awards for acting, as well as in her capacity as a student director and has been a member of the Women’s Interactive Theater Group.

She has been active in the school’s jazz and concert bands, editor of the school newspaper, served on the civil rights team, participated in the French Club and Dirigo Girl’s State. She has been an award-winning member of the school’s math team, medal winner at the Academic Decathlon, and is a member of the National Honor Society. Her school activities include cross-country, tennis and the cheerleading squad.

Cummings participates in the McGill’s Community Band, is a volunteer with the Houlton State Fair, and has worked as a Social Service volunteer by serving as a Big Sister to an elementary student. She has volunteered at a local nursing home and with the Carlton University Project.

Robin Sattler, daughter of Karen and Rick Sattler of Linneus, has been named salutatorian for the Class of 2002. She will attend Gordon College in Wenham, Mass., to study music education.

She has been selected as student of the month, Outstanding English Student in grade 10, recipient of the Principal’s Award this past year and recipient of the Principal’s Leadership Award. She is a member of the National Honor Society and serves as president.

She has been a member of the soccer team, tennis team, served as a Peer Helper, in student government and on the yearbook staff.

Sattler has been a four-year All-Aroostook participant in both instrumental and vocal music at the school. She has been selected All-State all four years, received several awards for her instrumental talent as well as her vocal ability including top female vocalist in the state, and has been active in drama and show choir.

She has served as a Social Service volunteer, volunteering in area nursing homes. Through her church, she has toured Asia as a member of teen missions and served as a volunteer in summer camp programs.

Thomas Long, son of Arlene and Cecil Long of Houlton, has been named first honor essayist. He will attend Bowdoin College to study mathematics and philosophy.

He has been a member of the jazz bend, jazz combo and jazz choir. He has been involved in school musicals and served as a member of the tech crew for numerous school and community events, and was a member of the school’s state champion show choir.

Long has participated in the French Club, Spirit Club and as a member of the school math team. He received awards at both the local and state level in science fair competitions and served at the Voice of the Shires at basketball games.

Emily Straubel, daughter of Sandra and Steven Straubel of Littleton, has been named second honor essayist. She will attend the University of Southern Maine to study music education.

She has participated in band, chorus, jazz band, show choir and jazz combo. She was selected for All-Aroostook Band and Chorus, and twice selected for participation in All-State Band.

She has been active in the drama program, received recognition for her work behind the scenes in lighting and as student director. She was selected as a member of the Drama All Festival Cast. Academic awards include selection for the Principal’s Award on numerous occasions.

Straubel participated in soccer, basketball and tennis, and received regional recognition for tennis, of which she was team captain. She has been selected the last three years as the Tennis Most Valuable Player.

She has been a member of the National Honor Society, participated on the civil rights team, and as a member of the math team.

She has served as a youth volunteer and participated in missions in European and Latin American countries for her church. She has been a member of McGill’s Community Band and served as a Social Service volunteer in area nursing homes as well as the hospital.
