Driver who fled crash caught trying to claim truck

BANGOR – Just 14 hours after a Hudson man evaded six police officers and a police dog by fleeing a truck accident on foot, he was summoned when he showed up at the Police Department to try to get his vehicle back.

“He came in to get his car because it was impounded,” Bangor police Lt. Steven Hunt said Sunday night. “After an interview he confessed.”

Scott Braley, 44, was summoned for failure to report an accident, filing a false public report and speeding, Hunt said.

Braley had been traveling north on Kenduskeag Avenue about 12:15 a.m. Sunday when Bangor police Officer Chris Desmond, traveling in the opposite direction, noticed a speeding vehicle coming toward him, Desmond said.

“He was doing 46 in a 25 mph zone and I was turning to pull him over, and he turned and drove into a ditch,” Desmond said. “As soon as he hit the ditch, he got out and started running and then I started running after him.”

Five other Bangor officers responded, including Officer Allen Hayden and his police dog Alto.

An hour later, however, the officers cleared the scene without finding the driver. The truck, a 1993 Chevrolet pickup, was impounded.

A passenger in the truck was not charged.

Police said they believe Braley made it to Broadway, where he hailed a cab.

On Sunday, Hunt said, Braley filed a report with Maine State Police stating that his truck had been stolen. But Braley showed up at the Police Department about 2 p.m. Sunday to reclaim his vehicle.
