Bucksport High School
BUCKSPORT – Principal Tom Sullivan has announced the honor parts for the graduating Class of 2002. Graduation will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, June 7, at the Ralph Hewett Gymnasium, Bucksport High School.
Melissa Patten, daughter of Linda and Steve Patten of Bucksport, has been named valedictorian for the Class of 2002. She will attend the University of Southern Maine to study biology and pre-medicine.
Patten has been involved in cross country, indoor and outdoor track, band, and yearbook. She was selected to attend Dirigo Girls State, and was chosen for the National Honors Society.
Marissa Leigh Denis, daughter of Kathleen and Dave Denis of Bucksport, has been named salutatorian for the Class of 2002. She will attend the University of New Hampshire to study art history.
Denis has been involved in the National Honor Society, Student Council, varsity volleyball, varsity indoor and outdoor track, Students Against Drunk Driving, Drama Club, Math Team, yearbook, prom committee and Outing Club. During her senior year, she organized a change drive to aid victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, participated in an Altrusa charity fashion show to raise scholarship funds, and now helps fellow students as a tutor and works with Miles Lane pupils as a reading buddy. She served as a delegate to Dirigo Girls State in the summer of 2001 and was elected to the mock House of Representatives as a write-in candidate. She has been recognized as the Bucksport Movie Queen, a Presidential Scholar, Maine Scholar, World Youth Microbiologist, Student Artist of the Month, and has received the Maine Principal’s Award.
Denis has worked at Vance’s Tropical Fish and at the Alamo Theater during the course of her four years at Bucksport High.
Eric Hanscom, son of Terri Hanscom of Bucksport, has been named first honor essayist for the Class of 2002. He will attend the University of Maine to study engineering.
Hanscom has participated in the honor studies program, received a Maine Scholars Achievement award in April 2001 and attended Dirigo Boys State in June 2001.
Sarah E.A. Liebow, daughter of Dr. Paul and Evelyn Liebow of Bucksport, has been named second honor essayist for the Class of 2002. She was named a presidential scholar at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., and will join the honors program there in the fall.
Liebow was a member of school friends, student council, a co-editor of the yearbook and a four-year varsity fall and winter cheerleader. She was a delegate to Dirigo Girls State and was elected to the senate.
