With a prediction of good weather for this year’s event, Carrie Anderson-Paquette of the Bangor YMCA reports registration is really picking up for the second annual Garelick Farms-Bangor YMCA Main Street Milk Run, with three starting times on Saturday, June 1, in Bangor.

The event, which takes place the first day of National Dairy Month, begins with a Family Walk at 9 a.m.; a Recreational Run at 9:20 a.m.; and an Elite Competitive Run at 9:40 a.m., all beginning at the Best Inn-Irving Station area on Main Street in Bangor.

The 1-mile route ends at West Market Square.

Last year’s Main Street Milk Run had 110 registrants, Anderson-Paquette reported, and raised nearly $5,000 for Bangor YMCA scholarships and programs.

However, she pointed out, that race took place on a very cold day, and only 75 people actually set out on the course.

That is why this year is looking even better: As the days warm up, race organizers hope at least 120 people will register – and participate – in the event that offers something for everyone.

In the Family Walk, for instance, kids can walk right down Main Street with Mom and Dad or, if they prefer, ride in their strollers!

The Recreational Run is for people who want to run to the finish line, but who don’t qualify for the next category, which is the Elite Competitive Run for the experienced runner, who meets a qualifying time of seven minutes or less.

At a post-run celebration in West Market Square, more than 70 prizes and awards will be given out, along with awards to the top three finishers in seven male and seven female age categories.

Individuals or families can register during regular business hours at the YMCA, 127 Hammond St., until Friday, May 31, or from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. on race day at the starting site.

Registration is $12 for individuals or $30 per family.

The event is sponsored by Garelick Farms, 92.9 WEZQ-FM, Bangor Daily News, Cadillac Mountain Sports, Aquafina, W.S. Emerson Embroidery & Screenprinting, Maine Signs and Granville Lumber.

Here’s a reminder that you can drop off donated items for the Mount Desert Island Hospital Auxiliary Giant Yard Sale from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, May 31, at the Somesville Fire House.

The Auxiliary’s Giant Yard Sale is 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at the Somesville Fire House.

Congratulations are extended to 13-year-old Katie Leighton of Bar Harbor, who is the 2002 Maine Champion Child for the Children’s Miracle Network of Eastern Maine Healthcare.

Katie has been fighting a lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis, but she continues to participate in many activities ranging from gymnastics to cheerleading and being a drummer in a jazz band.

Maintaining a positive outlook and a can-do attitude is what helped Katie earn the title of Champion Child. She is fortunate, also, to have the help and support of fellow students from the Mount Desert Island area, known as “Katie’s Krusaders,” whose goal is to be able to say someday: “We knew Katie Leighton when she used to have cystic fibrosis.”

You will be able to see Katie Leighton and other CMN “Miracle” Children from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at the Bangor Mall, or on WABI-TV5 during the 14th annual CMN Telethon.

CMN works to ensure that quality health care and wellness services are available close to home for children of central, eastern and northern Maine, and funds raised through CMN help support the needs of hospitals and health care providers.

On behalf of the East Orrington Congregational Church, Mona Spain invites you to attend a public baked bean and casserole supper from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at the church, 38 Johnson Mill Road, Orrington.

Admission is $5 per person.

You also are invited to attend the EOCC yard sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. the next Saturday, June 8, in the church parking lot at the same location.

Underscoring its “deep roots” in Greater Bangor, the Mabel Wadsworth Women’s Health Center invites you to visit its annual Buds ‘n Blooms Benefit Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at the Twin City Plaza in Brewer.

The sale includes not only annuals and perennials, but also houseplants, seedlings, herbs, vegetables, gardening supplies, flower pots and a raffle of $100 worth of plants and supplies.

Tickets for the raffle are $1 each, or six for $5 and can be purchased in advance by calling the MWWHC at 947-5337 or mailing a check to the center. You need not be present at the drawing to win.

The raffle includes gift certificates to Ellis Greenhouse and Nursery of Hudson, Ledgewood Gardens in Orrington, Everlasting Farm in Bangor and Rideout Gardens in Eddington.

The mission of MWWHC is to provide educational and clinical services in sexual and reproductive health care to women regardless of age, ability, race or ethnicity, sexual orientation or economic status.

Founded in 1984, MWWHC accepts no government funding other than reimbursement fees for services from Medicaid and Medicare and the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program.

The center is maintained by individual donations, private grants and events such as this plant sale.
